I currently play 40k, and i field a stealer shock type list (Nids). Why is that important at all, well becuase I dont neccesarily like to play power list, but list's that look good, well mini's that look good anyway. Here is my dilema, I like both the Orcs and VC, but from what I can tell, VC is like the Marines of 40k, I like to think of myself as somewhat of a tactician and not quiet the mainstream, not quite Napolean, but maybe his gopher lol. I really like the Black Orcs and would like to field many of them, the idea of elite units that can smash face sounds good to me.

I had thought about Ogres but the guy's at my FLGS warned that Ogres are not the most forgiving army to be starting with. So is an Orc list not neccesarily based around hordes viable? Is VC as common as it seems? Any advice, comments or general info would be great, I lurk the forums quite a bit trying to figure things out, but sometimes its just better to ask the question then to try and find it, thanks again.

Hi,

The person at your FLGS is correct that Ogres are not a very forgiving army, however, it's kind of scary that he didn't say the same thing about O&G, to be blunt, they suck. All of your units, at least once per game will do nothing for the turn, sounds great doesn't it? VC is a good beginner army and it requires tactics, all WHFB armies require tactics besides bretonnians. VC probably just seems really common place right now because of the new book that just came out, it always happens once a new book comes out.

"But remember that there are over 1000 chapters of spase marienz! So the SM codex has to cover over 1000 different kinds of spase marienz! Codex CSM only has to cover 1 kind (the Chaos kind). And I don't even think Eldar are a kind of spase marienz at all. Hurr!"

yeh the common lace does happen but the fact that you think O&G suck is appaling because It is probally one of the few armies that you need to have good tactics in order to reach your objective and yes ogres are not the forggiving but if done right they ca be good. Tey are not a beginer army though VC are hard to work with becuase of the special rules they have

Seeing as I play Orcs, I wouldnt say they suck because they sit and squabble once in a while. Just as often as they sit and squabble they WAAAGH out and rush toward the enemy, which really can upset your opponent, lemme tell you.

Orcs are very fun to play, however, you must not mind losing. Not to say ive lost every game ive ever played, but thay are random. Perhaps more chaotic than Chaos. Fun to paint, fun to play, and Waaagh Magic is awesome and is rightly feared.
If nothing else, pick up or borrow the book. Take a look.

Oh, and not "all your units, at least once per game" squabble. Ive had plenty of games where nothing or minimal squabbles. Some, such as the Mighty Black Orcs you were curious about, dont even roll to squabble. And if you have a black orc in a unit of orc and they squabble, he hits them for d6 hits, then they act as normal. If nothing else its a good laugh. And if you can beat your opponent he cant say you have a broken army.

Thanks, I am already trying to dig further into the information given, also maybe to help clarify, I didnt mention orcs and gobbies at my shop, I just saw some of the mini's and was interested, another way for me to look at it, or that I am looking for is an elite unit, I understand all the races have them but I mean that hard as nails dishes out nasty damage unit that everyone hates to see on a board, even if its in an unconventional army, like wraithguard no one likes to see, or the death squad etc... Thanks again for the feedback already!!

Orcs don't suck they are just very difficult to win with on a consistant bases. I've tried dozens of lists and will probably try out a new one tonight. if you go with a black orc heavy list LMK how it go's as i have not tried it yet..

Da fastest Orks get to da fight firstest!!! Waaaaagh!!!!!

I didn't say they weren't fun to play and I didn't say they can't win but they are probably the weakest army next to DE and their book really needs to be redone. As for the they don't squabble once a game, you have 6 turns do the math just because you have loads of times where it doesn't happen a lot doesn't mean it should not statistically happen once a game to each unit. They can be decent however, and a lot of black orcs could be pretty scary. Honestly, if you like the models and theme I would go for it because whats the point of winning if you don't like your army .

As for armies with elite units you might want to look at the High Elves book. HE's have elite units like swordmasters and white lions which are pretty cool and HE is a decent army for beginners.

and dont forget orc and goblin magic is some of the craziest in the Old World. I have won many a battle with MORK WANTS YA!!! especially on archeon. that was fun. and same with crazy units like fanatics. If you are looking for a fun army get a skull pass and build up from there.

I would agree. Gork's Warpath has struck utter terror into my buddies. Especially hysterical is when I miscast it, then roll on the SPECIAL ORC MISCAST CHART and roll 12 for irresistible. Ive done that twice now. Orc magic rocks. And dont forget squigs. ItP, 2 attacks each with decent WS and S. Whats not to love?
