so I just found out that you get the 1st stormbolter for free in the points, and so far have mounted all mine on the "pintle" but i see the spot now to mount the 2nd (or the hunter killer missile I guess)

so do you take 2 stormbolters on your rhinos, if so why? has it been successful for you or a waste of points?

I generally don’t, as the Rhino’s primary job is transporting, and its secondary job is blocking LOS. For both of those purposes I frequently want it to move more than 6”, and so it wouldn’t be able to shoot on that turn.

That said, I’ve frequently considered it when I’ve had a few spare points in a list. Having a Rhino with two SBs means it puts out four S4 AP5 shots up to 24” range, while moving up to 6”. Which is not bad at all. It can add some useful wounds on light infantry and might drop a unit under scoring strength at a critical time.

The second storm bolter is Great for Sisters or Inq Storm Troopers. It allows you to make a decent fore base, especially when you are min/max those squads, so you can get more Rhinos.

Also, its almost like a wound for damage. Instead of 1 weapon destroyed + 1 Weapon Destroyed jacking your tank, it makes it a bit more survivable.

I'd assume it would make taking Psycannon/Blessed ammo more worthwhile too, though I haven't looked at either codex in an age.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

no, simply because of the cost. For 50 + 10 I would rather just take a Razorback and otherwise load up on shooty.

It is worth it for Chaos who only pay 5 pts more. But for marines it is just a stupid points cost. Better to just use them as walls.

Now that said, they can be surprisingly effective when you do take them. 4 shots at BS4 might be enough to force a morale check against many targets. But it is just a dumb use of points imo.

My Marines always ride in Razorbacks, and I never mess with the Storm Bolters on those. Their trainees/new recruits (inq storm troopers) ride in Rhinos with the extra Storm Bolter and Psycannon Bolts. Four Str4 AP4 shots instead of the usual 3 Str5 AP4 shots ain't bad, and it's a comparable cost.

Yeah, it’s mostly a good deal for chaos, as it’s only 5pts on a cheap 35pt vehicle. It’s not bad for Blood Angels or Dark Angels either, as they pay the same prices. But they can get a Razorback with twin-linked heavy bolters for only 50; the only reason to go with the Rhino at that point is if you want a bigger squad. For regular (Codex: Space Marines) marines it’s not nearly as good a deal. You’re paying 50pts for the Rhino before any other upgrades, and the extra SB is something silly like 15. Never mind at that rate.

The extra bolter might well be more worth it in 5th edition where glancing hits can't kill a unit until all of its weapons are destroyed. That bonus TL bolter could give you one extra "hit point" in battle.
