Just tonight, skit with Steve Carrell as a contestant on Deal or No Deal, some guy as his dad, who ridicules Steve for living in the basement and doing nothing with his life ...

Dad -- "You just want to play with your monsters and your little friends"
Steve -- "It's called Warhammer!"

Note: I haven't seen the episode in question.

It's a stereotype for a reason.

Do you think "mundanes" got that joke, though? Or was this
a case of a writing team catering to too specific an audience
for a mainstream television show? I'd almost guess that
Dungeons and Dragons would get a better response.

The joke wasnt that it was 'warhammer' the joke was about his character being defensive and giving a name, and thus dignifying such activity, to such. He could have called it anything and fulfilled the joke.

Im not saying there arent people out there who dont fall into the stereotype, but most dont, and yet we are constantly under assult and given weird looks because of our passisons. I had an issue of White Dwarf here at work on like my second day and someone was like "Whose is this??" I replied it was mine, and with two thumbs in my own direction, I said "GEEK". Regardless of my pride, or how I presented myself, I got weird looks like "if you say so."

The majority of geeks are funtional members of society, some even get married and spawn. I hate being punished for having an imagination that thrives, and while I get the joke in the aforementioned show, I feel like its a cheap shot. Fear of Girls did it, and Im betting it was better. Tounge in cheek is one thing, this is something else.

Of course Steve Carrell's character in 40 Year Old Virgin painted too- there's even a shot of it in the film. Were they WFB models? I never paid much attention to it before....

The Warhammer reference was my wife's favorite SNL moment of the past few seasons.

Stonefox - your continued use of the phrase 'warhams' has caused it to become the 13th most common phrase people use when searching for dakka on google. Why do so many people want hams for war? I do not understand

Well, yeah I agree. I was actually surprised to hear him say Warhammer, I figured D&D or Star Trek / Star Wars or comics / action figures or Magic or anime would have all gone better for a joke about cellar-dwelling geeks. Frankly nobody I game with lives with their parents and nearly all of us are engaged, married or in long-term relationships. All the same, I marked out for the dig

Yeah, with you there. This episode was actually pretty decent though, McCain made at least 2 appearances and was pretty funny for an ancient dude (a fact he made sure to play up :S). Japanese verson of The Office was humours, as was a Obama / Hilary joint campain ad.

I think it would be great if Steve Carrell played miniature games. I've been doing this so long I don't notice ridicule, unless it's blatant. Even then I feel sorry for the person who mocks another's passion, for how could they have a great passion themselves?

What I do notice is the people and customers I meet who are intrigued by what I do for fun. I wear shirts with Aquilas and other iconagraphy, I keep minis and books around my office, and I'm generally pretty obvious about what I like. I get all kinds of folks who are fascinated by the unpainted and painted figures and the pictures on and in the books. They'll ask me what it's about and I'll give them a short synopsis of the game, and the usual response is, "Wow, that's cool, but I could never paint like that or learn a game that complicated". I've recruited converts simply by wearing my hobby on my sleeve.

If this makes me a geek, I'm OK with that. To mangle a line from the Hobbit, "If more people valued good food and fellowship (and minis) over gold, this world would be a better place."

If more of us valued food and cheer and 40K over hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

Ive lived on my own for over 10 years. I pay my rent, go to my job, and when Real Life allows it, I play my hobbies with my friends. Sadly Real Life doesnt always go as youd like it to.

I dont see why we arent allowed to be proud of our hobby? People walk around wearing sweaters and jerseys for teams that they dont even play for they just like a lot. People are encouraged to be proud of the "Home Team" and claim to be a part of it when they dont do one iota of work for it. They just drink beer and make a$$es out of themselves.

Gaming isnt a spectator sport. Though I admit its cool to watch a good game, but its even better to be IN the game. The Army Im fielding? MINE. I Chose to field that particular selection of models and in that particular formation. The Models? MINE. I bought them, assembled them, painted them. On the field, whether I win or lose is based on MY choices.

So am I proud of the, literally, hundred of hours Ive spend reading, choosing, painting, conversing, and playing? If Im not, if any of us are not, then we shouldnt be here on these boards discussing something so near and dear to our hearts. We shouldnt relish in something that we are ashamed of. Im proud of what I am, because Im proud of the decisons Ive made.

And maybe Im a bit defensive, maybe I doth protest a bit too much. But keep in mind that when I defend myself as a geek, Im defending YOU as a geek. Im just saddened, and the point of my argument, is that we need defending in the first place.

That's my point. "Geek Pride" seems to stem from a self-inflicted persecution complex. Being an SA goon, I see it on forums regarding furries and anime geeks. And I laugh at it cuz that's what goons do. Nobody cares unless you want them to care and "geek pride", from my experience, means you want them to care.

People can wear their fave team jerseys or wear a warhams t-shirt without drawing attention. But as soon as you start displaying your love for your hobby too much, you'll get the attention good or bad. Personally, I consider it attention whoring. The only difference is that geeks have forums to vent their persecution complex while that one guy who really loves the Mets only gets to annoy his friends.

In other words, playing warhams doesn't define me. Paintball doesn't define me. Lifting hard and running hard doesn't define me. Being excellent in school doesn't define me. "Geek Pride" seems to say, "I am defined by my gaming hobbies." You know what that sounds like? "I am so boring and one-dimensional that I can only define myself through this attribute that is central to my life."

I can't really say I'm proud of warhams since I haven't won a single GT or GD yet and it hasn't given me appreciable skills I didn't have before. But if I do win something, I'll be sure to be proud of my accomplishment.
