The chainsword used to have its own rules in 2nd ed. and Rogue Trader. You still see a vestige of this from Necromunda (+1 damage, as I recall). 3rd ed. streamlined this, rendering all 'close combat weapons', including swords, chainswords, power mauls (!), knives, axes, etc. 'close combat' weapons.

At this point it's just a style thing. GW does pointy hats, skulls, chains, and chainsaw swords.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

According to Dan Abnett, chainsword dueling in the
background material takes a certain subtlety. Why they
don't just shoot each each other while they're fiddling
with chainsword direction and balance I'll never know.

Are you trying to say something you pay points for does nothing? You do realise that having two close combat weapons or a pistol/close combat weapon grants +1 attack?

Usually chainswords are classified as close combat weapons that give you
+1 Attack. It's a flat price you pay no matter what that generic close combat
weapon is. So you do get something for the points cost.

a chainsword is not a standard issue close combat weapon.you must be a SM or allowed to choose from armoury ,and now, boltpistol and combatknife was in some units pointsinclusive.already 2 weapons taken
when enlisted(plus bolter)means no need for extra one.
Are new codices all the way done as the DA/BA(wd)?
no more armoury? Weapons like chainswords always
bought at start ?(first 5-men by squad).
because i began at 3rd ed wh40k,i never noticed
any special use for chainswords, only in background -
novels, where it gets stuck and the character fires then
his boltpistol pointblank.

I have pretty much no clue what any of that was about.

A chainsword is just a close combat weapon with added awesomeness.

Why do some people insist on typing like this?

Uh, anyways - you are way off, a chainsword is a standard issue close combat weapon, for the Imperium, and you certainly don't need armoury access to get a close combat weapon.

Eh, it doesn't really need any special rules or anything, all you have to do is look at it and go. "DAMN I want ta get me one of those!" And thats the effect it has, pretty much you can make any weapon awsome if you change the blade to a chainsaw belt!

okay,i 'll shorten my words next time, more readable then.
Looks great for me this chainsword, but it is no real choice,if you have only chainswords at a plastic sprue.

In 2nd ed. they were S4 and had a -1 sv modifier so they were an upgrade for guardsmen but kind of redundunt for marines (who were S4 already which naturally gave a -1 sv mod)

Also, they are much cooler than big sticks.

In retrospect, I probably should have explained. This does sound incredibly callous.

I meant when I see people
typing like this, that is -
not using the entire space
for their post.

Bugs me.

In the old rules the chainsword did offer you some advanatges, now it's just a cool thing to wave in someone's face. I don't think a power sword or force sword would be as scary. Yeah, they crackle and hum and glow, but this is a cross between a sword and a frickin' chainsaw! Right before it crunches into you, buzzing like a thousand angry hornets, you're thinking "Aw, crap, that thing's gonna eat my f***ing face," and then it does. Who could ask for more?

I didn't play 2nd ed 40k. But in the game Chaos Gate they had all these esoteric weapons you could upgrade your marines with, particularly if you played instant action so had access to everything in the game. One of the combat weapons was a gold chainsaw with electricity crackling around it. I don't remember the name, but is that something that was actually kicking around in 2nd??

A chainsword is awesome. The only way it could be cooler is if it had boobs and was on fire.

I've been saying stuff like that for years.... Since like 2002 when in college we had a discussion about what makes things cool... He may have borrowed it from me since I've said it on many forums since then : )

what makes things cool.
1) violence
2) Fire
3) Nakedness
4) Newness
5) boobs

Coolness might go for modelling aspects, but where is the game part?
New dex give already any marine a boltpistol and grenades,if youre a DA assault its
not CCW! Definitly chainsword in unit entry

Read the rulebook. A chainsword is a close combat weapon.

I'll give you the same answer again next time you ask, if you like.

@vandez: I know thats a CCW, just wondering to read BT and SM,
where a CCW is mentioned as weapon, then looking to DA and BA
and there is the same unit equipped with "chainswords" !
As DA or BA must have chainswords? SM and BT can take any CCW ?
