I was making a mold shuriken cannon for a jetbike and I used vasaline to lubricate the mold. while doing this I noticed (as i'm sure some of you did aslo) that the green stuff can still be molded and loses its 'sticky' quality. it stayed over the entire mold and needed very little to cover it. but I don't know if it is the oil in it that makes it smooth and slick the mold so well.

because vasaline is a petroleum based lubricant it can't be washed off easily. but if you had a water based lubricant it would be able to wash off and you could paint and prime the model like normal. has anyone else thought of this or tried it?

yep
vegetable oil works well and washes off with dish soap
"personal lubricants" are water based, and work very well.

Yep.

You can also buy mold release from arts and craft stores like Michaels.

sounds like a porno....

But seriously... I have done both. neither washes off well... but you can use a brush and soap and scrub them to get the stuff off.

yeah I knew the topic would turn to that.

on another note. has anyone heard the news about 'grey' stuff? its from the same guys but I guess you can control how hard or soft it is, its not as sticky, and if you need more time you can put it in the freezer and stop the curing process.

@trooper: yeah but micheals and I don't get along well. they are way to expensive I have to bite the bullet to shop there and thats only because I have too for canvas or other things.

cool, I need to pick up some more green stuff at the store (I've been using the same blister since before scouts where plastic) and I"m going to have a try at making hair on my farseer and see how I like it.

Dude, they scatter 40% off coupons every 14 days like winshield flyers! If there's one nearby or on the way to work, just pop in every 2 weeks and get all your stuff for cheap!

KY works really well for any sort of lube you need to wash off. It rinses off with water very easily, but is gelatinous enough it doesn't run all over.

You can also get on an e-mailing list to get 40-50% off coupons from Michaels and AC Moore sent to you. My wife gets 1-2 a week. The is really no reason to get anything there full price, provided you can con enough people to go with you, or if you can wait a day.
