as the rules stand (4th ed) hoe do you determine line of sight when shooting through infantry?

my friend keeps his zonthropes behind a wall of gaunts and says we can't shoot them becasue their not monstorous creatures.

can't I just take a leadership test and blast the damn thing through the gaunts?

also the 'size' of terrain is giving me a lot of issue's. if its a size 3 hill and I put a landraider on it can a model on another size 3 hill shoot at a squad behind the hill? he keeps saying that size is capped at 3 but I know that can't be true.

A gun is a medium, a bullet a brush.

This is clarified on pg 20 of the rulebook. "Models from the same side do not normally block line of sight and enemy models can be ignored for line of sight purposes."

There are exceptions listed on this page, so please be aware of them, but otherwise, shoot that brainbug after a target priority check.

About terrain. Terrain size is only used for reference to Area Terrain. Other than that, its pure Line of Sight. If you can see it, you can shoot it.

Moz:
You: "Hold on, you rammed, that's not a tank shock"
Me: "Ok so what is a ram, lets look at the rules."
Rulebook: "A ram is a special kind of tank shock"
You: "So it's a tank shock until it hits a vehicle, and then it's a ram, not a tank shock, and then it goes back to being a tank shock later!"
Me: "Yeah it doesn't really say any of that in here, how about we just play by what's written in here?"

Infantry never block line of sight. The only time models block line of sight are...

1) They are vehicles
2) They are monsterous creatures
3) They are infantry in hand to hand combat with units that have a WS stat.

In all other cases, you can see though models (friendly or enemy).

As far as terrain size goes, I would suggest going back and reading over the rules for it again...twice. It can be confusing. One of the things you have to differentiate before you start playing though is which pieces of terrain are area terrain and which ones are not. Only area terrain has a size and this should only be things like forest and the like which you represent with templates on the battlefield rather than actual tall pieces of terrain. Anything that isn't area terrain is based on true line of sight. You look from the model's prespective and anything you can see is in line of sight so long as that line doesn't cross though area terrain. In the case of the hill, unless you are saying that it is also forested, it should probably not be area terrain and thus not have a size level attached to it at all. When you are dealing with area terrain though, size 3 is infinatly tall as far as the game mechanics are concerned and infinity + 1 is still infinity. So in your case, it is impossible for anything to ever see over the size 3 area terrain to shoot something on the other side. They would have to go around the terrain or be placed into the terrain to be able to see something on the other side.
