I'm going to start playing with a few people who are also brand new to the game in this area. I'm going to be representing Cygnar, and I am digging on Nemo for some reason. Any advice on what I should buy to start? The Cygnar starter box doesn't really have that gets me going, but I really like the look of the Centurion, the thunderhead, all the lightning sword guys (jacks and troops), and hey some shootiness (trenchers, gunmages, ?) would be cool too.
I don't need a list that's awesome from the start. We're going to be learning as a group here, and starting with a 'net-deck' would be pretty lame. I'd just like some info on what to avoid with the things I like listed above in mind.

You'll want a Centurion and a Lancer to start with. The Centurion's shield is really good and the Lancer for its arc node.
Also a Journeyman Warcaster, I've never seen a Cygnar list without one.
The Stormclad is overpriced and the Storm infantry are usually better supplanted by Swordknights in most situations.
Both Long Gunners and Trenchers work well with Nemo.

Nemo is not an easy caster to do well with. I would suggest you start with Stryker, Haley, or Siege. After that, Caine or Darius or any of the epics.
Centurion is really good.
The Thunderhead is solid, is great with Haley, and seems to do OK with everyone else.
Generally, everything Cygnar is more points and more elite. Keep that in mind, since you'll often be out-gunned.
Cygnar, imho, works best when you have some combined arms.
Personally, I would avoid
Jacks: Chargers
Infantry: Gunmages
Everything else can work. X might be better than Y, but it can all work and has a point. Just build a list that functions well together.
Personally, if starting new, I would look at:
Jacks: Lancers, Centurions, and in some builds - Hunters, Sentinels, Defenders, the Thunderhead, and Ironclads
Infantry: Precursor Knights (with or without the unit attachment), Trenchers (with or without the Unit Attachment), Rangers, Storm Lances, Stormguard
Solos: Gun Mage Captain Adept, Journeyman Warcaster, Arlan Strangeways (out in a week).
If you're just starting, I'd suggest you play some Mangled Metal (caster and jacks only) to get the hang of the FOC mechanic.

Start with Haley, she's a tier 1 caster that doesn't require a huge grasp of the game.
Cygnar has a few auto-includes: journeyman warcaster, stormsmiths, most likely a gmca as well.
With haley you're going to want longgunners, sword knights, and trenchers.
For jacks: a centurion and a lancer. The arc node really helps because she has chain lightning.
Things to avoid: chargers, hammerers, gun mages, stormblades.

I think what we both said, in so many words was, 'Nemo isn't an easy caster to start with. Haley is pretty easy to learn and a good caster as well.' If he wants to play Nemo, no one will stop him. But, I'd rather see him start with Haley (or Stryker or Siege). If he starts with Nemo, he may just give up because he is 1) not easy to learn and 2) not one of the 'top' casters even if you learn how to play him. After a few games with one of the other casters, he might have a better feel of the game and do better if he switches to Nemo than if he just starts with Nemo.

I was contemplating the following list for Cygnar
Nemo/Haley
Lancer
Hunter
Hunter
It's less than 350 points and a fair starter list for WM games.
Nemo
Centurion
Lancer
Hunter
This list is also under 350 points and has plenty of variety of units.

I've just started with Trolblood. Naturally my first choice was the Diretroll. I've also bought some burrowers (got a good deal) and the starter set.
As for Cygner, well, I'd say the starter set and that big jack, whatever it's called. Either that or khador.

Thanks for all of the responses. I've made my purchases at Nemo, Centurion, Lancer, box of Trenchers, box of Swordknights, and a Journeyman warcaster.
I'm happy that nemo will be difficult to start with actually. I like having too much to really comprehend in my hands at the beginning of a system, it helps me grow into it faster. Also cool that he can synergize with the thunderhead someday, that model is sweet!
I can't wait to get building and painting this stuff, thanks again team dakka.

I'm very dissappointed that you didn't wait for my advice before you made your purchases/ Very rash decision - may you rot in warjack Hell.
Having said that, make sure to document your progress in P&M. You may yet atone for your sins.

"Nemo, Centurion, Lancer, box of Trenchers, box of Swordknights, and a Journeyman warcaster."
Good job, you'll be able to use those things in a lot of other lists too.

Solid purchases, though I'm not a fan of Nemo (mostly due to bad experiences against Khador.) Swordknights absolutely love Centurions and Lancers. The bonus they get combined with a reach 'Jack is great.

You're doing Trolls now, Hellfury? Sweet. They're far and away my favorite Hordes faction. If you're going to go DTM, get thyself Hoarluk as your second caster. And pick up some Champions and a fell caller. Champions routinely win me games almost by themselves, and a fell caller backing them up is very, very wrong and twisted.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil |

I've got eNemo, he's sitting on my desk with a bunch of other figs that I just assembled waiting for an undercoat. I think my problem with Nemo is that I like to hit things with big swords/maces/axes/etc. Nemo does not do that very well by himself.

Speaking of Mangled Metal... here's my favorite, and it doesn't include Nemo...
Haley
3x Defenders
Lancer
Lots of Heavy Metal butt kicking...
PS: It's exactly 500pts...

Cygnar must... SUPPRESS... this... CULT that refers to it's self as The Protectorate of Minoth. They must be brought back into the fold... or they will see their god before they had planned on, which Cygnar will be more than happy to broker...
