I played Space Wolves from 2nd Ed. on up to a little bit before the last version of 40K came out. I have their most recent Codex but it is laughably out of date & basically I have seen that everything that was cool about them (venerable dreads, true grit, counterattack) has been given to every Marine who wants them, often in superior form. They are basicall ya dead army at this point & I don't even know if it's legal to use their last Codex anymore. Certainly not if you want the ideally viable version of them.
I know there is no updated Codex in the forseeable future so what do people do? I was considering playing them again & dusting them off, in the current rules. But they look so pathetic & sad...oh look every vanilla chapter has Bjorn now...nothing could be lamer. Should I just pick up the Marines Codex & choose traits that emulate them?

SW are actually still a decent list, in drop pod form and in 5th they're good on the ground too.
Marines are being nerfed soon, which is good news for me as SW will still be powerful for quite a while--and being able to walk through marine armies with greater ease than ever is something I look forward to.
Sadly, with the costs of drop pods going up the nerf bat will unintentionally (and unplaytested) hit the best SW list which is drop pods. Probably why a ground force was tested in the first place, and found decent enough to try again.

I have no idea how good they would be in 5th cause no one has rules for them in 5th. And the most recent version of them prohibits drop pods.

i've been told SW codex at the end of the year. Almost the first new one out past the spacemarine dex. And wolves love droppods, they don't teleport

They're far from a dead army. If they can get close, they are competitive. The biggest problem I've had is Mech Eldar, who out-range SW and are mobile enough to stay out of range.
The SW Ven Dread is superior to the SM Ven Dread. 1) It can be an HQ choice. 2) It's WS and BS 5 (and I think has an extra attack). 3) It lets you reroll to go first (which may be meaningless in fifth edition).
SW are not a top tier list, but can be tricked out and give people fits. With the changes in fifth and the new SM codex, I'm probably shelving my drop pods and going with a mech list and BC bikers.
