Subject: Anyone run or participate in a local leader board?

So the guy who was running in our FLGS stuff is moving out of state, and I've been tapped to replace him (woo free store credit!!). One thing I'd like to do is a leader board. At least I think that's the proper term. Board with a couple spots on top, with more spots on each level as you move down, challenge someone above you to steal their rank for bragging rights.
Anyways, I'm wondering if anyone's run/set up/participated in one of these and might have any words of advice on things to do or avoid.

We've been doing a small one at work for years. How we did it was that you had to defend your position to gain a "Challenge Token," which could then be spent to challenge someone on a tier above you. After a while, things seemed to be moving too slowly, so we just let people challenge a guy above them immediately after achieving their new position. I suspect that you wouldn't have that problem if you had more people involved.
We had the defender be able to choose the mission type (standard, battle, blitz, etc.) and points value (within certain limits). Specific battles could either be chosen by mutual consent, or determined randomly after army lists had been written.
We determined initial placement randomly, and decided that whomever defended the #1 position three times (not necessarily consecutively) would be declared the champion, and get to keep, as a symbol of their office, the golden dogtages emblazoned with the title of "WARMASTER" on them.
Any specific questions?

The store I go to had one in which everyone who participated paid a set fee to participate in. The winner received the cash paid in after successfully holding top spot for four weeks in a row.
People on the lower rung could issue as many challenges as they wanted in a week with these conditions:
1: If they were beaten by someone, they could not challenge that person to play in the same week they lost to them in.
2: Out of consideration for RL obligations, no one had to defend their position more than twice in a week.
3: If a scheduled game was missed by one person or the other and the one missing the game hadn't called to make other arrangements for a different game time within 4 hours of the scheduled appointment, they forfeited the game.
4: A player could change his army list between games, but had to keep with the same army they started with for the whole time the board went.
It was a pretty simple set of rules and things went smoothly, although there was a bit of an attrition rate as some people started dropping out from the discouragement of being constantly beaten. I'd suggest keeping things going by having a "secret square" in which a random lower position on the board gets some kind of prize awarded to whoever occupies it every Saturday.
The players positions on the board were initially awarded based on how they did in a 1,000 point tournament. Anyone who couldn't make the tournament could still get on the board, but had to start on the lower tiers.
It was one of the late arrivals that ended up winning the board.

The store I play at has discount cards for those on the leader board. I think #1 starts at 40% or 30% and it goes down from there. I can't remember at the moment.
Anyone can challenge up to two spots above and those not on the board can challenge #5 or #4. Players on the leader board must play at least one challenge a month to stay on the board. Board players also had to play the same army, though not the same list.
There was been debate over the best way to start the board, that is what was the best way to run a small tournament to determine who was the better player. The organizer wanted to run an Apocalypse team event- one massive game Imperium v. Xenos. Once one side won they would fight it out for spots on the board. A number of players though this was not a balanced method. Previously the store ran a pretty standard tourney with no soft scores to determine placement.

The only one I played in was kind of odd. The initial placements were determined first via some tournament that happened long before I heard about the whole thing. After that the secondary consideration (used for about 75% of the players) was several rounds of 500 point games. Once those were over, the board was set up and challenges and what not proceded. I quickly lost interest because it was too hard to set up a game. I think that if you really want it to work, you need to have some set times for people to come in and play but also allow people to set up their own games outside of those set time frames if they want to.

eah, I could see some problems setting up games. People decide they wanna duck a challenge against an army they think they will get hacked by, etc... Maybe need to set it up so that you HAVE to answer a challenge, couple that with a set day each week where everyone comes in to play? I dunno.

We had a rule where if you didn't accept a challenge within a certain time limit, you simply forfeited your place. Our time limit was pretty long (and flexible, if it was clear that the players were making a good-faith effort to set up a game).
