I'd say a pin vice (& rod) and some type of epoxy putty should be added to the essentials.

I do agree that should be part of the basic tool kit, but not for the person who's picking up figures and paints for the first time

I don't like pinning. I usually just use greenstuff and zap a
gap. It's good enough to get me by.

I also don't like slipping the drill bit into my hand and
leaving a tiny sliver under the skin that lasts for weeks
at a time.
