Guard seems like a net gain in 5th ed. They'll have gobs of LOS and don't have to worry about assaulters killing more than one unit at a time, and their tanks are excellent now.

The only downside I see is that they have too many units in the missions where kill points matter.

I'm dying to do a beastmen guard army, and this just might be the motivation I need.

You can never have too many units.

Table the enemy, and you win.

Mech Guard with LD bubbles and 20-25(+!!) units on the board are real bitches to deal with in 5th edition.

Tanks die, but only to extremely heavy firepower. If you can't match 9 oblits or better in your army, you won't be killing mech guard.

Well the infantry shooty guard army that was so successful (at least for me) in 3rd certainly would here. And honestly that's what I was thinking about taking off the shelf.

Mechanized is definitely sounding relatively attractive. But it doesn't sound like as much fun to run as pure sisters.

Right, you can totally own face with the current IG codex. 10 lascannons, 10 autocannons, and 10 missile launchers will cripple most armies. I know, everyone hates ML. Frag missiles are great toys against horde armies with the 'all partials are hits' rule. Oh I touched 7 gaunts? neat...

Until they fix the guard so you can shoot through your own units, I'd be leery of doing all guard. Especially with side infiltration being in virtually every game...if you have 200-300 guard, you get template'd and you get all of your guardsmen annihilated in a single hit. Guard don't survive blasts that autohit everyone they touch.

That's why I think mech guard is better. You can seriously punish the enemy, and being able to move and tank shock with 10 tanks will let you focus assaulters into your kill zones. On top of all that, those g-d damn tanks do not die! lol
