This cropped up in one of the gajillion 5th ed discussions over in news and rumors so I thought I'd transplant and start a new topic on this one. BT codex will soon be a legacy codex- it will retain many of the current strengths of Spaz Marines (las/plas squads, 2 assault cannon terminators) while gaining some entirely new ones for 5th (LRs get good, large troops choices).

So does anyone else think these guys get a major boost compared to other marines in 5th?

I think you've got a bunch of cheap assault marines that now run across the board. If you shoot them, they get closer. Alternately, you've got 3+ LRCs screaming across the board at you with chaplains and crusader squads in them. This is all backed up with the ever reliable Las/plas squad.

You've outlined a couple of HTH options, but I'm not sure how good that's going to be, considering the new countercharge rule and the fact that you can't "bounce" from unit to unit via the d6 consolidation.

Well, they'll need something TBH. They cost more than regular marines, have a weak-for-the-points Emperors Chump, can't take Devastators, and most opponents insist on playing Righteous Zeal incorrectly (to the disadvantage of the BT player).

BT have been the red-headed stepchild for long enough (as retribution for being broken so badly in 3rd edition) if you ask me. Time for BT to again be a force to be reckoned with.

C99's prediction:
Black Templars are 40K 5's version of Blood Angels from 40K 3.

Everything you said is true, plus:
1) Land Raider Crusaders as dedicated transports. S4 weapons to back up the assault cannon, POTMS, ignoring lance weapons, etc.
2) POTMS
3) Emperor's Chump becomes better when he can reliably join a 14-man squad and start the game in a LRC.

By RAW, BTs don't have to move at all when they Zeal if they don't want to, but many people insist that they do.
