Okay, so, you should know by now that for the most part I am pretty stoked with most of the 5th edition stuff of how it is written and whatever else.

However, I saw one thing and instantly winced. Under go to ground it says that you should mark the unit with either a token or you can lay them down.

I fear that muppets and other WAACzis will start using that to get additional true LOS protection and, even worse, a little bit of extra movement hear and there. It isn't really going to be game breaking so much as annoying.

At least so I fear. Think I am wrong?

If you are a poster rather than a player I beg of you to share your witticisms, insight and tactical expertise elsewhere.

Bring extra marker tokens and insist your opponent uses them to speed up gameplay

I think that you may have a point, but a very small one. This sort of thing to gain extra fractions of an inch is nothing compared to rubber ruler syndrome, or those people who think they can use their hand to translate the angle of a scatter die to a template on the other side of the board.

As far as the LOS thing... I would presume that laying a mini down is a marking method, not a game mechanic as such. I would suggest making that clarification with your opponent before the game.

If it is a matter of concern, just insist that your opponent use markers rather than moving or laying down his models. Problem solved.

Here's the fun one.

I go to shoot you.

You lay your models down.

Now you have cover.

We disagree.

Wanting to be sports, we just go on playing and you lose -1 to your cover saves.

It's a silly recommendation to lay models down...unless breaking figs is your idea of fun, anyway.

It's going to be a rollercoaster for sure. Laying down models for LOS is an interesting new 'tac' situation though.

Wouldn't a Terminator look kind of silly lying down?

Oh that's right, they look silly anyway.

I think laying the models down is a great idea. If your troops really are hugging cover to get a better save, then they should be harder to draw LOS to as well. This is once case where the rules and logic go hand in hand.

I can say right now that my poor SM captain, sergeants and squad leaders will remain on their feet, defiant until the bitter end. There's no way I'm going to risk snapping all those thin plastic banner poles...
By the way, won't lying down reduce the squads ability to fire as well, since they can't see over obstacles worth a damn?

Indeed, glory. In order to shoot (properly) they will have to stand up in the Movement Phase. No rule allows you to move your models in the Shooting Phase (except in very special circumstances)......

Nonclamentur: no, it only applies to vehicles (just pointing it out).

.....so they can only be put back in prone in your next Movement Phase, thus creating the horrible LOS again.

Don't forget when you go to ground you lose your next turn for that unit. And that "pinning" nolonger exists in the form we know, when killed by a pinning weapon you go to ground instead. So when a unit goes to ground they can't fire.

I think your opponent is more likely to eke out extra movement distance by choosing NOT to go to ground and moving 6" in their turn rather than just sitting there.

yeah, I can see how this is going to be super annoying. We base the miniatures for a reason, why are we laying them face down on the table. I'll have to read specifically how it is written but I would be surprised if you didn't describe it exactly.

True line of sight is already going to cause a lot of arguments and make a lot of people rethink their terrain (that they intended in the previous edition to block line of sight). This is just going to be one more headache as everyone lays their guys down and says you cant see them anymore.
