Gaming club. ALWAYS.

Hello all.

There may have been a thread like this before, but I won't bother looking.

So, are many people here on Dakka girls? I always find our games club full of guys, and I have no problem with that, but it can be good to have a game with another woman once and a while. The few other women in gaming I know are the girlfriends of guys who game.

Seriously, I don't see many women playing 40k or Warmachine here in Toronto. I've tried to recruit both male and female friends of mine, and it's almost entirely the guys who are interested to try it - I've only had one female friend try a game, whereas I've convinced at least 12 male friends to give it a go. The one woman who *was* interested was a ringer though - apparently working as a contractor and being very familiar with the difference between a 6x8 and a 6x6 gave her the ability to accurately eyeball distances down to the quarter inch (shudder), and she smoked me in a Warmachine battlebox game.

Even though they are not done yet, I hope she takes time out from her own projects and makes some more headway on her stuff. It would be great if she and I could go down to the PolyCon and meet Ozy in SLO. Neither of us have a full army painted yet so that kind of puts a damper on going. It is a lot of driving though.

All the off-topic posts in this thread have been deleted.

on a more serious note, we had another thread where we determined that more women were attracted to MMOs than wargaming, which I suppose is obvious.

I have been thinking myself that people attracted to wargaming tend to be more aggressive. So someone aggressive is attracted to wargaming rather than being a die-hard trekkie, for example.

Busy somewhere, airin' out the skin jobs.

As an aside, isnt it funny how the 'plainest' girl can wear clothes revealing just the slightest bit of cleavage, enter a game store, and is instantly transformed into a ROCK STAR!

I've always thought this funny.

A couple of years ago when I was still married, I was going to a VTES tournement (vampire card game), my wife was playing and had only the slightest bit of experience. I told her to wear this awesome top that showed her 'girls' off while leaving her stomach bare with a tight pair of jeans. She whooped so much a$$ with her deck against hard pipe-hittin' players and had almost NO experience.

I always enjoyed playing the guys that brought their "hot" girlfriend in to distract the players. Their plans go down the tubes when you completely ignore the girlfriend except for a friendly "hi".

Either I'm half-gay or my level of maturity is higher than average in the wargaming community. While playing in an RTT I joked around with a guy's wife and while she did look somewhat appealing, when it was time to roll dice, I won 2 of 3, including a solid victory against her husband. I did however enjoy getting to talk about something besides 3+ ward saves and armor reduction while at my FLGS.
Maybe it's just that I'm married as was she, and I didn't want either of us being needlessly uncomfortable or possibly it was the screaming toddler the couple had brought along that made me go "Ungh! Wailing brat!" instead of "HUR! BOOBIES!!!"

Yeah. I especially like the way you used "hot" in addition to deadshane's "how the 'plainest' girl" statement.

Well, let's be honest, "hot" to one person may be "what the hell is that thing, your pet badger?!" to someone else.

I would say that Table-top RPGs and such appeal more to women as well. I base this on the fact that I posted a similar thread on an rpg site a frequent and I got a tonn of responses (from women) in a short time.

Seriously though, after a while going to tournaments where your the only woman gets a little irritating after a while since, when it comes down to it, you never really get treated like one of "The guys" until everyone knows you really well and even then new people always treat you differently.

One other thing that I've noticed here, is that most of you only know girlfriends or wives who play their husband/boyfriends game. VermGho5t mentioned his sister played, which is alot like me. I was brought up with three brothers. That's probably why I play these types of games.

In my experience, the girl gamers are just as varied as the dudes. I've played some that were just "gamers", and that was that (that's most of 'em). There are those that act like the DM's girlfriend, and they irk me. No, you can't re-do the shooting phase. No, you can't have those five guys coaching you. They are, fortunately, in the minority though.

I do try to make the extra effort to treat them just like guys, though (minus the gay jokes, of course).

Wow, I've never heard a greater pile of stereotypical bull.. If there is one thing I've learned about any girl who participates in any typically male hobby with any level of seriousness it is that they should never be underestimated. I've seen girls on the paintball fields make most guys present look like newbies renting their gear for the first time. I've seen one of the better WHFB players I know, fight tooth and nail for a minor victory over a girl. Hell, I've even seen girls who do that LARP thing with the foam-sword-style-medieval-combat set guys a foot and a half larger than them on their ass. People need to realize sometimes the greatest advantage you can have over the competition is being underestimated.. Unless that was meant as sarcastic humor, then all I have to say is "lol"

The underestimation thing gets old after awhile. Winning games because the guy your playing against assumes you don't know the rules or won't play aggressively or play to win gets tiresome since you can't find a real challenge. Once people get to know you though they don't pull punches.

Another thing I've noticed is that guys always are surprised by the armies I have. No, I don't play SoBs. Yes, your heard me right, I have an SM army. And no, the SM army is not composed of women.

Supposedly everyone is. Half-gay, I mean.

The only female gamers I've actually played with (in-game, I mean) have been RPG players. D&D, primarily. One was the DM's girlfriend (later his wife), and the other was the wife of another player. They were both legitimately good players though, for the most part. Although the tendency of one to play useless bards was a bit annoying after awhile, as she was usually the first to get dropped in a straight-up fight.

Wargaming though...well, my last girlfriend played Flames of War with me once. It was okay. We played Axis and Allies once or twice too. It's not really something I want to discuss.

This post is going to turn out a lot different than I started it.

Don't have many females at my FLGS. Except for the strippers who come in dressed for work (long story), they seem to just be gamers. A bit more competitive. Less fluff, more competitive. One thing I have noticed, and that I appreciate; is that they seem to have more of a "if it's legal, roll with it!" attitude. No fluff bunnies here! Blind, crippled, or crazy; if it's in the book it's good for the tabletop! I appreciate that in an opponent. I find it's more of a gaming stretch.

And they're fun to talk with. It's different.

As far as girls not being tactical; the ones who are not, are prob. not interested in these games, and are doing something else. The ones who ARE doing this as something more than trying to spend some time with the b/f tend to be rather competitive or they don't last long.

Back in the 'nati there was a woman who played dark eldar at a fairly high level, as I recall. I also met one in college who played chaos (FB and Bloodbowl) and another who played Mordians.

Again, most of the XX gamers I've encountered have been rpgers, or were drawn in by the dollies (though that defines most folk, methinks), but I've met a fair amount who do the miniatures thing, though interestingly, mostly Warlord, Warmachine/Hordes (which I think has a higher rate of women enthusiasts, but that may be just perception) and Battletech, of all things.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

I realize my statement came across as a stereo type so let me go into more detail. Obviously there aren't many females who play 40k. Obviously there are a lot of male players that don't have a good grasp of the tactics... so probably why we don't see many females that win a lot is simply because there are less of them that play the game. I have met two women who play 40k at GTs. The first one played orks and tended to lament on how the army had lost its flavor in 3rd edition since most of their zaniness had been dropped from the rules. I don't think she won a single a game to be honest. The next one I met had a beautifully painted eldar army and told me she was into the army appearance and fluff over performance.

Most of the women I have met that play tend to play eldar and I believe that is because this race allows you to field female warriors such as Howling Banshees. Some of us like to be able to identify with our armies.
My last girlfriend was a solid 40k player and really was into all aspects of the full... so they do indeed exist.
