I have heard that in 5th edition Force Weapons now just cause instant death on a successful wounding and psychic test. Is it just me or are force weapons now really only character killers? They used to be helpful against monsterous creatures, but all the big, bad creatures now ignore instant death. While there are still a lot of Hero models out there, are force weapons good enough to be worth having? It seems with the new Retinue rules that a simple powerfist or thunderhammer would be much more useful.

You are probably right, unless you know what you will be facing. Guess its decent against another SM army but thats about it.

I was not aware there were any units that you could buy force weapons for. I though they were all non-optional gear that came with psykers.

In either case, it would appear that outside of characters, there are not going to be many places to apply force weapons.

Inquisitors have to buy forceweapons like the old Librarians. They weren't worth it in 4ed cause you paid so much for a S3 force weapon (good luck getting a wound on stuff you'd wanna instakill). It's even worse now.

Space Wolf Rune priests have to pay for force weapons but everyone takes frost blades instead.
