With VPs headed to tie-breaker status, will "Without Number" Gaunts be a worthwhile way for Tyranids to grab objectives, given the rather fragile nature of their troop choices?

Math sure can come in handy!

yes, especially if you give them scuttelers, and have winged synapse.

Seems like a good choice to have screen the army and then later have them reboot and head toward any objectives near your table edge.

Sushicaddy, are you thinking scuttlers will let the new brood come in from the side? I don't think that is how it works, (cause the brood is not in reserve?). Could be wrong though.

I'd add that in 4ed the brood could come in from the side edges of the deployment zone, but that appears to not be the case in 5ed. Kinda prohibits their usefullness.

Also, while VPs have less impact, KPs will still be an issue with Without Number. Hordish Tyranids will already have trouble preserving KPs cause they usually use zoanthorpes and warriors to maintain synapse, adding more KPs to such an army seems like a mistake. Better to use the Without Number points to add more gaunts I think.

I think lurking with them for +2 cover saves will be pretty pimp.

Agreed, so long as claiming anything with them is irrelevant, and they are in range with their limited range.

I already find "without numbers" useful if used intellegently in 4th - now in 5th it may be somewhat regularly used. the 64pt squad of 8(+8+8. . .) does not give 64 points anymore if slain. One VP each time - assuming it comes up - is acceptable.

I think it will be a lot more useful in 5th than in 4th. In 4th, you lost scoring status if you were below half. In 5th, you keep scoring status till you are completely off the board. So in 4th, your opponent could just knock you down to below half and ignore you. That doesn't work anymore.

Threads should be like skirts: long enough to cover what's important but short enough to keep it interesting.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

maybe one or two small squads, just for victory point purposes.

I think they actually have to make it back into synapse and regroup in order to count (I don't know how many turns that would take), unless they could just lurk as soon as they came on the table.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I would rather take more cheaper gaunts.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Ill sign to that. More units on the board all the time feels better.

I would rather have at least one group of gaunts I can guarantee to be on the table every single one of my turns no matter what my opponent has or does. No partials . . . and gaunts are not famous for making saves, let alone even getting saves.

Adding more to your brood does not even touch that. Large broods need to be entirely eradicated - but so do small ones. Thus the use of without numbers. It has its place.
