I'm looking for general tactics to follow when playing against nids. They seem to be the army I have the toughest time with. I play chaos btw.

Are you up against Nidzillas or Hoard nids?
Mix of both....

Lots of Nidzilla at my FLGS.

What kind of list do you run?

A dual-lash, obliterator and hwy plasma list can definenlty give nidzilla a good game. But its very individual depending on your army how to handle them.

For Nidzilla I've run

10 termies with 2 reapers, 4 fists, plus tzeentch lord with demon weapon

squads of CSM with lascannons and plasma

4 obliterators (all I have)

Raptors with melta guns (have 5 raptors and 2 meltas in the squad)

Defilers for swarms

Plague Marines for extra durability

I try to stay away from Lash. With the new FAQ it just seems way to cheesy to me.

Isnt nidzilla also considered cheeze by those who use that expression? Both things are the best the armylist can bring.
Go for lash on DPs
Also, get combi plasmas on terminators. You might even skip the reapers and maybe get a hwy flamer or 2, this way you can skip defilers for swarms and get points over, if possible for more obliterators but havocs will do too if you dont wanna buy more oblits(ML works nice on them).

You would prefer to shoot out at longer range with that kind of army and just use lash to either push back things getting to close or draw something uncareful into rapid fire range of your plasmas or into charge range for your dual princes(they will kill any shooty lord and half damage fexx). If they got hordes comming close lashing them up for hwy flamers will hurt alot. This changes abit depending on the mission but should be your main plan.

Combi plasma is a must for termis, but in general, they are not that strong against Nidzilla - your shooing isnt always the right type to harm them (Chaos termies tend to be best shooting light/medium infantry), and if you are running powerfists, you will lose quite a few models to MC attacks before you can do anything. They arent a bad choice, but they are not what I would reccomend.

Much the same with the Chaos Lord really, S4 shooting and Melee really does little to T6 Tyranids. Chaos dont really have a great HQ against nids now that force weapons cannot cause instant death to synapse creatures.

The rest of the list is certainly the right idea though - plasma is typically very good, as are missiles (cheaper than lascannons and do a wonder on all the T6 3+ save MCs). Focus more on this element and mobility than CC fighting them - its very hard to safely engage without getting torn apart my counter charges or short range massed fire.

You will have more deployments than him, make sure to at least partially refuse a flank so that his M6 units really have to to earn their keep.

Best luck!
