So I'm told in 5th you can attach an IC to a unit before the battle.

How does this work for an IC attached to a mandrake unit? I'm assuming the IC would just not do anything until the unit is revealed?

Also, how would the new wound allocation work with a unit of grotesques with an IC attached? Would you just assign wounds on the grotesques even though they shrug them off, only assigning wounds to the IC when your required to?

The v5 rules are clear that a special rule must specifically say that it is conferred onto characters joining the unit for it to apply to the character.

So in this case, if you wanted to join an IC to some mandrakes before the game the unit would have to deploy normally.

As for allocation, you've got it right.

yakface's 40K rule #1: Although the rules allow you to use modeling to your advantage, how badly do you need to win your toy soldier games?
yakface's 40K rule #2: Friends don't let friends start a MEQ army.
yakface's 40K rule #3: Codex does not ALWAYS trump the rulebook, so please don't say that!

Mandrakes are always hidden, aren't they? And only their special character can do anything with them?

They are hidden until revealed. But it's a special rule so I suppose it wouldn't apply to the character.

Oh well, guess I'll stick my WWP in a unit of grotesques instead.
