Hey everyone.

I am looking to attent the GT this year with my Tyranids. Im not a very strong 40K player (well, at least not relative to fantasy), so I turn to you all, the Dakka Community, to aid me in our now joint quest for tournament success.

I want to run a Tyranid Horde - I dont own any TMCs whatsoever, and have really enjoyed running an all gaunt/warrior style army in any case. I would love your input into how to build an effective list...im thinking something along the lines of:

Brood Lord: Toxin, Carapace, Tendrils
Some number of Genestealers with Carapace

2 x 4 Warriors: Adrenal Glands (Ws+I), Scything, Rending, Leaping, Carapace
Some Lictors

Some number of hormagaunts?
Some number of termagaunts?

Potential raveners?

Potential Zoanthropes?

So, as you can see, a lot of doubt currently. For the little its worth, ill give my thoughts on each unit and its potential:

Genestealers: Will be in the list, the only issue is how large a unit. Now that they can run, its more viable to select a larger unit that the previously small unit it was always better to run. Ill be always using infiltrate to start them on the board, not flanking for me...I need them centrally to counter things like Demon Princes and Ork Boy hordes

Lictors: Ill either be taking 1, for tendrils, I6 run down/lock and for destroying vehicles in cover (its going to be more common, so its n easy way for the lictor to pay for himself), or more, depending on whether in Dawn of War units automatically enter play on turn 1, or whether they have to roll...if they have to roll, more lictors is probably better.

Hormagaunts: Not sure how many to include, or how to equip them. With Ws5 I5 they slaughter MEQ like its nobodies business, especially if combined with the Lictors or Broodlord's tendrils. S4 is also very viable - its good against tanks and will make other horde lists more easily manageable, again, especially of combined with tendrils. Better to just run more numbers?

Termagaunts: Always great, they are very useful. Ill include as many as I have the points to do so.

Raveners: A little worse now that the Warriors became buffed, so that they more or less serve the same function. I still own some, so Imake note of them for the purpose of their potential inclusion.

Zoanthropes: I used to love these guys, they were more synapse and a nice AV 13-14 counter. Miasma is always useful. With the new kill points however, they may not be as worth taking, and with enemies almost certain to be getting 4+ cover saves against a scattering warp blast, I think there killing power will be greatly diminished. With vehicles also becoming harder to destroy at range and easier in combat, I cannot see them being as viable a previously, except perhaps in a synapse + catalyst + miasma supprting role.

So, what would you include and why? How would you construct a killer horde?

Bear in mind im from Australia, I dont have to play against the super power lists, so no need to worry overly much about countering them.

Cannot wait to hear your thoughts!

Much appreciated, James F.

I hope this is what you are looking for.

Keep in mind you can *not* kill Land Raiders or Liths.

Yeah high def vehicles are going to be your enemy with that army list. Needs more balance IMO.
You will probably have to invest in some MC soon when new rules are released and rendering gets worse at trying to damage armour values.

40k - Orks (lots), Nids, Elder, Necrons, Demons, Space M

WFB - Orcs, Demon Nurgle (not updated), Zombie Pirates/ Vamp Counts, Tomb Kings, Wood Elves

Actually only the Land Raider and Monolith are immune to this list.

The rest of your comment doesn't actually jive with the ruleset of 5th edition.

isnt the rules for rendering against vehicles getting worse in 5th ed. I cant open up the book and put rules on the table as its not released yet but I remember reading it.

16 Hormagaunts @ 224 Pts
-+1 Int, +1 WS, +1 Str

Heavy Support:

2 Zoanthropes @ 90 Pts
-Synapse

Total Roster Cost: 1750

The Hormagaunts in V5 can now take down most tanks and can do some serious damage. With the support of Feeder Tendrils, they can kill over 7 MEQs on the charge or get 7 glances on most stationary vehicles. They should be screenable behind the termagaunts which bulk out your forces. The Lictor, Genestealers, and Broodlord gives you those needed re-rolls and the Warriors should be dangerous also. The Zoanthropes cement the Synapse core of your army. With over a hunderd models, you should be solid.

Rending works the same as before, with the exception that it adds a mere 1d3, instead of 1d6, so it's worse against vehicles, yes. Assaults always hit vehicles on the rear armour, however, so Leman Russ armour isn't 14 during assaults on the front, anymore, it's Armour 10. The only vehicles that have good rear AVs are the Land Raiders, and Monolith.

Also - vehicles could be dealt with by Zoanthropes with Warp Blast, I suppose. Then the AV 14 Land Raider won't obliterate your list.

The original poster said he had interest in Zoi's, so I figured if he wanted them he'd add them in.

Sorry guys, my mistae...the 40K GT in Australia is only 1500 points...sorry.

What's everyone's opinion on the BEST way to equip hormagaunts? Its never something I really have come to a concrete answer for myself in regard to...
+1I is cheap and lets you go before marines
+1Ws serves both defensiveand offensive pruposes
+1S gives a lot of viability to using them offensively

I have been using:

Brood+6 Stealers

2x4 Warriors
Lictor

2x20 Hormagaunts: +1S
3x16Termagaunts

2 Zoanthropes: Synapse, Catalyst

=1500 exact, 106 models

The consensus here seems to be "more genestealers" so ill see what I can manage.

Thanks for everything so far!

Another thought, a little different now, maybe better, maybe worse?

Brood Lord: Toxin, Carapace, Tendrils, Flesh Hooks
5 Genestealers: Carapace

32 Hormagaunts
32 Hormagaunts
12 Genestealers: Extended Carapace, Tendrils
12 Genestealers: Extended Carapace, Tendrils

Then either:
4 Tyrand Warriors: Scything, Rending, Leaping, Carapace, Adrenal Glands (Ws+I)

OR

3 Zoanthropes: Synapse Creature and Warp Blast

Option 1 adds more hittiness in close combat, option 2 gives some AT and tougher synapse.

Why large squad sizes?
1. Very very hard units to wipe out
2. Makes it very easy to keep units under control of my limited synapse
3. Very easy to effect LoS blocks or multi unit charges...if a SINGLE enemy unit holds the entire unit remains locked
4. In Dawn of War I can deploy two troops - either two large stealer units or two large hormagunt units, whichever is more appropriate

This army has a lot of CC power, but of course, unless I choose the zoanthropes, it lacks AT at ranged...although both lists have 30 rending models with feeder tendril bonuses.

Very exciting! What do we all think?

If you don't have synapse, your gaunts won't move.

I'd split the gaunts into 4 units (maximized troops choices) and bring zoanthropes.

I think you'll be shot to pieces with this list though.

Perhapas make the troops choice stealers 2 x 9, then with the points run BOTH the warriors and two zoanthropes? Gives me even more synapse, some AT etc etc.
