So I'd really like to toy with a 3 battlewagon list, something like this:

2 meks with KFF

3 19 and one 20 of shootas (for the battlewagons) (Edit, I first put 2, but this is supposed to be 3, one for each battlewagon)
2 trukk squads

5 koptas (split up somehow)

3 decked out battlewagons

So would this work? The battle wagon is AV14, but is open topped, so a lucky glance can take it out. And it's AV10 in the rear, so just about anything can take it out in hth.

This looks like alot more fun to play than the 'wall-o-kans' list I think is going to be so (relatively) common.

Well, wagons are still AV14, which is hard to glance now, and will only get tougher with a cover save. As for HtH, it's not like the 50 orks are going to sit idely buy during combat.

As for effectiveness, are battelwagons puncy enough to actually kill anything? I'd be worried that they simply won't accomplish enough in shooting. Deff Rollas give them tank shock punch, but I'm just leery of their return on investmen.

the nice thing is that if they don't stop your advance in one turn, they are doomed. I'm not sold on the koptas though, but that's just me. If they work for you, then cool.

Koptas are mostly for objective contesting. They are also great sacrificial units if I want to plus up some area and keep someone from advancing to me.

This is what I'd do. Park the nobs behind the BW, put the gretchin inside (or outside, doesn't matter). Sit back with the 4+ cover save, and don't worry about your lousy BS. 6 BW will do damage. The grots aren't much, but 15 nobs will see off most assault units. I don't think 2 units of trukk boyz will do anything. I run 4 as a minimum.

The shooting isn't all that, but not dying to much is the high point of a list like this.

I figured that's what they are for, but they seem to die to easily for my tastes...LOL. YMMV.

as far as I know only troops can cap obj in new 5th ed.
if your worried about your battle wagons being damaged from being open topped then just give it ard case.
I think a 3 battle wagon army would be great however most of the heavy weapons wont really have much else to shoot at to distract them.

I run 3-5 battlewagons, and won a doubles tournament with a 3-wagons-in-1000pts list (allied with chaos).

Deathrollers are beyond amazing as long as you can still tank shock vehicles - I'm getting the impression that will go away in 5th. If you use them offensively you need extra armor. Don't forget the reroll of terrain checks, a 13" radius (plus the wagon size) bubble of instant light vehicle death is extremely handy.

Best single deathroll of the weekend was a rhino dead, a devilfish dead, and breaking a full tooled fire warrior squad off the table. That's a lot of VPs for one vehicle's movement phase.

Killkannons are pretty terrible at killing things, but they're good psychologically.

The best thing about mass offensive wagons is that you can cut your trucks down to a couple of squads, and hide them behind the wagons - this is very reliable for getting into assault. You should also be able to hide biker warbosses completely out of sight for use in 5th.

When building wagons, don't fall into the trap of making them long - on the table they're far more effective if they have a roughly square footprint or wider, otherwise you get shot in the side way too easily. Yes, this is dumb.

It all depends (to me and my team at least) how the 5th edition rules for "tank shock" and it's ability to be used against armored units is worded.

Right now, running over the enemy with 4 battlewagons in each game is so much fun, it's reward enough for never having given up on orks and saving my army for 17 years.

It is like the best thing ever isn't it. I had scratchbuilt a whole battlewagon company a year or so ago now, with krushers (despite how not-so-hot they were in the KoS codex), and on reading the new codex I was in ecstatic happyland.

Woohoo!

So you can explicitly tank shock smaller vehicles still, as well as ramming? How do they interact?

Speaking of Battlewagons, I was thinking of taking one in my Ork army. Which upgrades and weapons are good for it?

After learning of all the weaponry options that a Battlewagon can take, I've made my own just for fun!
Dead-Shooty Battlewagon
Upgrades
Red Paint-Job
'Ard Case
Gunz
Killkannon
Kannon
4 Big Shootas

Points Total: 200

I'm not thinking of actually fielding this, but it would be ing hilarious to do so!

Actually, the battlewagon could only fire the killcannon or the rest if it stood stil. So the other weapons would be for when it is immobilised again and again. The killcannon and kanon are not worth the extra points then IMHO....

I use a cheaper one (no killcannon and kannon) to transport my units of 20 slugga or shoota-boys into other enemy's. Works pretty well if the opponent doesn't have to many anti-tank weapons. the fact that to immobilise it with weapon destroyed he needs 5 glances makes up the cost IMHO. If the opponent immobilises it then the 4 big shootas plus content can just pour out a good number of shots, or a nice charge backed up by a pretty shooty battlewagon. alternatively it could repair itself if you get a grot rigger

The effect of a big bunker in the middle of the field is pretty nice for a unit of shoota's at least...

I am in the progress of making just such a Battlewagon in the shape of a Russbot. Not that I would ever field it with that loadout, especially in 5th.
I just thought a "Dakka Wagon" would be fun to build.

The head with the Kannon is still to come.

Since this is the Tactics Forum, I would say that it isn't very tactically wise to field this one.

I would hope against hope that they errata the deathrolla to read "ram or tank shock" instead of just "tank shock". I'm thinking of the "rollin thunda" list...

Steelmage, what is that white plastic on your Russbot battlewagon pic? I'm thinking of converting a tank to be a battlewagon and I'm looking for a good material to use.

It's plasticard. Plasticard is chuffin' ace.

Opinions are like arseholes. Everyone's got one and they all stink.

Like Greenynog says; plasticcard, available in most hobbystores in A4 sheets of various thickness.

Plastic "For Sale" signs work pretty well too, if your hobby store is too expensive.
It is also called "Styrene" here in the states, and you can get lots of different shapes it you need.

Edit: Forgot the tactics part I wanted to ask.

Would it be worth it to have a ratio of stripped down battlewagons to tricked out? For instance, if I had 3 battlewagons, would it make more sense to have two be opentopped with guns for the assault troops, and then a third with kill cannon for say a unit of lootaz or tank bustas to ride in, then be parked in a good firing lane as an AV14 bunker with scary gun? (Or some combination thereof)

this might be a stupid question, how do you do the rivets on the plasticard? I really like that.

A holepunch, as those used for making new holes in your belt. Buy a new one and only use it for plasticard for the best results.
