I've been thinking of getting the Shadow RST to use as a 40k civilain vehicle/armor limo
or the PLA APC
without the gun it could be a 40k truck.
I know there was a lot of disappointment when they came out, people saying the paint jobs weren't up to spec or they were too small.
But would they work?

What size are they? The APC (sans turret) is pretty much exactly how I pictured the Cargo-6's in the Ravenor books.
They look like they may be a bit small.

Small was the main comment when they came out. Here are some action shots:
The figures are supposed to 28mm, but a bit less chunky than GWs stuff.
Now the PLA tank in that shot is TINY. But the jeeps seem about right, and I see they're like $20 for 3. So it seems worth while.
The PLA tank looks smaller than a chimera, maybe the size of an old Rhino?
But it's 1 for $20 or so, a bit pricier.
EDIT crap, I just talked myself into buying the jeeps...

I think that the APC would work very nicely as a civilian vehicle in 40k. The jeeps too.

At least you are trying to do something with that " other game". 2 for trying.
The vehicles in question are too small for 40K. There was a discussion back in the day and they showed the 40K IG standing up alongside a BF2 infantryman. The discussion ran along the lines of what "True" 25MM was as compaired to what BF2 was doing to the minis. They showed a number of different 25-28mm modern minis and everyone of them was on a different level of "25mm". All of them were around a head to a head in a half larger then the BF2 guys were. IRL, the models are almost compaired to 1/72 scale. I got into a heated discussion over the scale, as opposed to price. BF2 is a game that one could do themselves at least 300% better at 1/72 scale.

Well they're on their way and we'll see. The cars might be the right size, I think people overestimate how big a 28mm car should be.
Stand in front of a car with your legs spread, one arm straight out, one fist in the air while being bald and screaming. For bonus points wear a thick padded jacket, buckets on your shoulders, a motorcycle helmet and a full camping backpack and stand on a 3' wide round platform.
Everyone would agree you can''t fit in that car.
But put your arms as your side, tuck your legs in and you fit fine.
I remember someone took an old rhino and fit 10 of the old landspeeder pilot marines in it. It was amazing.
The dynamic poses make GW figures look larger and take up more space than a real human would.
Anyway, we'll see. I'm thinking 3 armored limos, one for the Inquisition, one for the genestealers, one for the SWAT team.

The cars look OK for cars, though I think they are that French light armoured vehicle which actually weighs about 4 tons and is quite a substantial item.
The tank is definitely too small. I went to Bovington Tank Museum a couple of weeks ago. Tanks are bloody huge.

I think the tanks were too small - even for their own models, which were nearer "realistic 25mm" than GW's "heroic 28mm". But for the rest? Who knows! If it looks right, it is right for this kind of stuff. And not having to paint the suckers is a heck of a plus to balance against the negatives!
For cheap 40k vehicles though, if you are up for proxy you can't really beat 1:48 scale plastic kits like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TAMIYA-32538-1-48-SOVIET-KV2-HEAVY-TANK-RUSSIAN-KV-2_W0QQitemZ260253096729QQihZ016QQcategoryZ1189QQtcZphotoQQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Modern tanks are pretty small too. Compared to cars they are huge, but many are not much more than 8' tall. The M1A2 Abrahms is officially 8' for instance. Older tanks often were under 10'.
Now, that isn't to say that 40k tanks HAVE to be only a little taller than a Space Marine, but a modern tank would just just about the same height. Not that Space Marines are necessarily sized to scale... aren't they supposed to be 7-8' tall?

Actually the Abrams and the Paladin when used in games of 40K are TOO big.
They are baneblade size.
Panthers and Tigers are also a bit on the large side, being quite a bit wider and longer than a Leman Russ...but they can pass.
Shermans are too long, as are most tanks.
Most people don't realize the LR only has ammo storage for one round...in the breech.
Stuarts and other similar tanks look fine on the hull but the turret looks wrong and the gun is silly (in comparison to the LR silly gun anyway).

1.36 early WWII generally good for Leman sized
1.36 post war is LR/super heavy sized. Beef had a series of predators made from them that show the scale.
A fun test-go to Wiki. Get the dimensions for whatever tank/vehicle. Multiply by the scale differential and compare to rhino/Russ/chimera for reference. This worked well for me.

8 feet high is about right for a tank. Some were taller, not many were much shorter partly because most tanks need room for the loader to stand up inside.

Scale of tank reference:
M1 Abrams
Now compare that to the third picture in this thread - where the Chinese PLA seem to tower over their tank. OK so they are on bases - which effectively gives them 12" scale height extra or so, but even so...
However, the armoured cars and the 6-wheeled vehicle look a lot more sensible for "true 28mm" scale. Whether they work for "heroic 32mm" scale is something else altogether...
As has been said before though - not all tanks are massive like tha M1. The British Scimitar Light Tank, for instance, is pretty diddy in comparison. More like an armoured transit van really in size!

That looks more like the german Weisel series. Those are small armored gun carriers, not MBTs.

It's a Scimitar reconnaissance tank, armed with 30mm cannon firing 90 round a minute. Based on the same chassis as the Scorpion which has a 76mm gun. Aluminium armour, weighs about 8 tons. Ground pressure is lower than a man's footprint.

We used some of the technicals for a game of Ambush Alley. They're 'true scale' 28mm, which means they'll be a little on the small side for GW, but mounted on a base and with enough chains and skullz (tm) they'll probably be fine. No, a Space Marine wouldn't drive one, but I can't fit an 7 foot tall, 500 pound sexless rabid hairless ape in the front seat of a pickup either.
|
Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.
I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil |
