hi there everyone...im realtivly new to 40k...and was looking at the eldar 4th ed codex...so my question is

in the codex in order to take wraithguard as a troop selection you must have a unit of 10 with a spritseer...since this is the case is that the only way for me to play an iyanden army?

To play a themed Iyanden army, yes most would say so.

However, you can run 3 wraithguard units, 3 wraithlord units, and 3 guardian units (and toss in whatever HQ and fast attack suited your fancy) and be considered Iyanden.

The wraithguard can be of any size, really.

Trust me, just adding some transports and HQ's to the above mentioned units will run you alot of points...

You can play an iyanden army any way you feel fit to. At this point, its just a paint scheme and a general idea. All you have to do is make sure you have one HQ choice and 2 troop choices in your army. You could do that by taking 2 small guardian or scout squads, a farseer, and then loading up your elite choices with wraithguard and your heavies with dreadnaughts. On the other hand, you could take some 10 man + spirit seer wraithguard squads as troops, any HQ of your choice, and then whatever else you like for the rest of the army.

In the end its up to you how you want to play your army and beyond the basic requirements its up to you how you fill things out. If you want to stay true to the Iyanden theme, then cram in as mainy wraithguard and dreadnaughts as you can and then fill the rest with whatever you like.
