I'm going to prime a test mini in grey, basecoat the shoulder pads in olive drab or red and wash the entire figure in Paynes Grey and post the results of that and see what that look like.

The article mentions diluting the Payne's Grey- can you add a note about how much you usually dilute it?

Sure. I use a straw to drop water into it and give it a squirt of Vallejo Glaze Medium. Very scientific. I will add that note to the article. It's a bit of a 'by feel' exercise because of it's consistancy, it squeezes out into a little pile, so you can't really measure drops.

would it work without the glaze medium? I found some paynes grey at the craft store down the street but there's no place that sells vallejo products around. Anything comparable to it?

It definately works without the glaze medium. In fact, I've been using it for years without it. The glaze medium just helps it flow better.

This had the potential for being a GREAT article, until you got to your mixing recipe.
Unfortunately, that one section dropped it from GREAT to GOOD.

Next time you mix some up, would you see if you can be more specific? For example, most pharmacies have free "Tuberculin Syringes" for giving liquid medicine to babies and toddlers. Essentially, it's a syringe without a needle on it. There are measurements on the side and everything (ml, I think). When mixing my inks, I use them for accuracy.

Not a complaint. Just constructive criticism.

Thanks for sharing the info!

Eric

Recipes with any of the liquitex paints is tough because of the thick consistancy. You can't really measure it out by the drop. I also change my consistancy depending in whether I want a thinner or thicker mix.

Great article.

I used this technique on some Ork Boyz and was very happy with the results.

I bought some other brand of glaze and it seemed to work fine.

The mixing ratios are tricky. Kind of a feel as you go thing.

I have a suspicion eyes were done on the payne's grey example of wash and not on the GW wash one

Also, a comparison with just Badab Black would probably work better as a comparison.

That being said I love this and bought some straight after reading the article and now use it instead of badab black. But still!

Son can you play me a memory? I'm not really sure how it goes...

I also ran out and grabbed a bottle after reading this. I picked up Golden glaze medium while I was there, it sounds like its about the same as the Vallejo stuff.

I tried using it on my space wolf I was painting and it seemed to work okay, I think I put too much water in after re-reading the article(6 drops glaze medium, 20 drops water)

Still came out looking really good once it dried tho, I just had to use multiple layers.

Nice. I am going to have to try this out. I have been making a lot of different home washes and this begs to be tried out. Thanks.
