n I recently started a space wolf army with all the marines i had lying around which you kind of accumulate over the years of not collecting space marines.

Anywho, after a few false starts of trying to use my new MEQs like orks: they ran forward and then i ran out of men

and Gaurd: turns out two long fang squads isn't really that much firepower, and once again i ran out of men.

and deathwing: great though having all my space hulk termies on the board is, it doesn't seem to actually achieve anything

I've settled into using three six man grey hunter squads, one long fang and two blood claw packs, backed up by a combo of Bjorn, a lord and some scouts.

To off set the fact that my venerable dreadnaught is the only anti tank bullet magnet in the army and my comparatie immobility I've decided to mechanise...

so I can only use rhinos with the bloodclaws, but my grey hunters seem custom buiolt for razorbacks:

6 man squad - check

can't take their own heavy weapon - check

good at shortrange firepower and getting charged - check.

So I figure that 3 razorbacks with meltagun armed grey hunters (I have no plasma gun models) drive forwards, out hop hunters, cue short range death and if they get charged under current 5th edition you can get 3 attacks each (1 basic, +1 for countercharge skill, +1 for true grit which is a rule in the codex so in my view isn't gone due to loss of universal special rule)

Now I know the reasons normal marines don't use razorbacks; ie they are a crap way of getting an overcosted lascannon on a substandard rhino, but in a heavy weapon short army like space wolves do they work better now.

the other dilema I have is what to arm them with, instict says lascannon, but cost, the fact the meltagun provides antitank, and the increased likely hood of attracting anti-tank fire of this is making me think heavy bolters, which combined with pinlte SB will make a moderate anti-infantry tank/ shooting into rear armour thingy after deploying troops.

Any advice???

oh and yes i still have the doors to just give up and turn them into rhinos when i realise this is a waste of time.

Vompire, welcome to Dakka. Please use punctuation in the future. You’re arguments will be sign with greater merit and you’ll avoid people calling you on it.

This is my first time to the site but I have been playing/tweaking my Space Wolves (both original and 13th Co.) list for a while.

I have had some good time with the 5th ed. in the local GW and retooled my lists accordingly with only two HQs you are probably playing around 1500 points and a suggestion that I have (which is what I had to do with my lists) a combination of rhinos and a razorback but only if you have the points to do so. Keep it cheap but you should be able to afford a twin linked lascannon that way.

Also you need to think about using your forces in combination to your theme i.e. units to shoot, a unit for anti-tank and backup for assault if you are going shooty or for an assault theme, units that will give you the most unsaved wounds, the 'safest' way to get them into combat and anti-tank support. Another thing to think on while you are working on your list are the run and cover rules in 5th ed. that will help your troops survive, plus deep striking has changed (drop pods) so you have another option for transports.

*note*
I have left my advice fairly open because you need to figure out what way you want to play your army, and from what I have read you still have some work but are headed in the right direction. I have turned to the web for advice and gotten a ton but a lot of it the way others think I should play and not the way I like to play, get your direction and come back with specifics to get answered so that you won't get lost and frustrated.

If you want advice on the strengths of the SWs and specifics in your list I am always here to help someone new to the fold but our codex is tough to get the most out of. When get how it works though MAN can the wolves of Russ do some damage! Welcome.
