I just found out there's a 40k rogue trader this sunday at local comics shop... I have been playing fantasy daemons so I dont have an army setup yet... I originally had thought about 2 GD + 3 DP but i dont have the models yet and it is bit late to get them... here's what I do have in my collection... I am not sure if i have enough (power-wise) to be attending the tourny:
1 BT
3 fiends
12 flamers
20 horrors
20 plaguebearers
1 epidemius
3 tzeentch heralds
20 bloodletters
10 seekers
12 furies
10 hounds
any suggestions on what kind of army i should make to be competitive? I am pretty sure I will need BT, some of the flamers, horrors, fiends and hounds. I am just not sure if i have the "punch" in the 40k arena... thanks!

One good way to determine if you have enough to go to a tournament is simply to go to the tournament, albiet with no expectation of winning everything...
If nothing else, you'll be able to test your army against a variety of other lists and see what works and what doesn't. Unless the tournament this weekend is charging a high entry fee, I'd go and just play some games. If you win, even better.

That's a good collection.
Take 2x10 Plague Bearers with icons and 2x10 Blood Letters.
They provide a decent core.
Fiends and Flamers are a must have, while I suggest either Furies or Hounds.

Are you serious? You have a collection that a lot of people would kill for!
Go:
Plague x10
Plague x 10
Horror x 10
Horror x 10
BloodLetter x 10
Bloodletter x 10
Flamer x 5
And any HQ you want. You would have 500 or so points to spend on HQ. Put some Bolt of Tzeentch in the Horror squads for anti-Tank.
Don't worry about Daemon Princes. You have the tools to make a whole bunch of Imperial sushi out of your opponents.

thanks for the suggestions. The tournament is free so I guess i will go and see how i do. Plaguebearers are so hard to kill but they may never see combat - but good icon holders though.

Like people have said, go with the goal of having fun. You may get to play against things that you normally wouldn't see, and that's always worthwhile.
There's also the chance that the other guy has a sub-optimal list as well, so don't assume you'll do poorly! Just be sure you know your own list's rules well before you go.
Have fun!

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k. Rule #1 - BBAP

Go!!! Even if you don't win any of the prizes, it's invaluable experience.
Before you do, however, please, please, please get in at least one game if you've never played 40k or if you're rusty. It's frustrating to play against someone who has no experience playing their army in a tourney setting.
And bring that Tallyman of Nurgle. See if you can borrow a DP, and them give him breath of chaos and a mark of nurgle. Helps build that tally really quick, and the DP isn't slow and purposeful.
