Game 1 vs. Praetorians with DH Inquisitor
The Hunted – “10 Rough Riders”

The 6th Squad of the Ravenwing outriders noticed unnatural activity in the ruined sector of the destroyed Imperial capital city and suspected that it might provide a lead for capturing an elusive Fallen who was rumored to be in the area. The 6th Squad informed Belial who readied a strike squad to deploy to the inner city in hopes of redeeming another Fallen.

However, the Ravenwing were not the only ones to detect the unnatural energy pulses. The energy drew the attention of a zealous Daemon Hunter Inquisitor and his local contingent of Praetorian Imperial Guard. The Inquisitor dispatched a full squad of Rough Riders to investigate the energy source and to purge all who stand in their way. Following the Rough Riders were a squad of Ogryn and many Imperial Guardsmen packing fire support squads to establish an impenetrable perimeter.

When Belial arrived at the outskirts of the city he noticed that the Praetorians were dug in hard cover and had established fire lanes that made a direct approach difficult. Belial was aware of the persuasive powers of the Fallen and their ability to sway the weak-minded to their cause. He ordered the Whirlwind to anchor itself behind a major building in the rear of the battlefield and parked the twin Predators behind another building directly right of the Whirlwind. The IG continued to dig in and spread themselves across the battlefield setting up many cross-fire lanes.

The two Rhinos deployed on the far right flank and the Tactical squads inside formed combat squads; keeping the sacred plasma guns inside the tanks and deploying the two lascannon squads to cover their advance and threaten anything that might oppose the Predators. The IG realized that they were about to be flanked and brought the tough Ogryn to face the onslaught.

Hoping to draw some of the IG away from his assault, Belial ordered the two Ravenwing landspeeder tornados to deploy on the left flank but kept his Ravenwing bikes clustered behind the Rhinos prior to rushing forward in righteous zeal to assault those that would fraternize with the Fallen. Prior to the battle the Scouts were able to sneak forward to hide in ruins right in front of multiple IG fire support squads.

This deployment was beneficial as the Dark Angels had the initiative, but stayed hidden to let the Praetorians waste their first shots. Once the Dark Angels felt the initial fire had subsided, Belial and his Deathwing deepstruck right next to the advancing Ravenwing to add much needed firepower on the flank. The landspeeders quickly shifted flank to overwhelm the Praetorian’s left flank. Heavy bolters sang staccato hymns of holy fury as the Predators pumped blessed rounds into the dug in Praetorians while the Whirlwind pounded the Rough Riders. The Rhino squads pushed forward and utilized smoke to conceal their advance. The Scouts sprang from cover and joined the Ravenwing squads in assaulting the Praetorians that had advanced to gain better firing positions.

The Praetorians forced the Ogryns forward and into the Ravenwing. Brother Thaddeus of the Ravenwing flexed his powerfist and met the Ogryn charge head on. Belial commanded the Deathwing to join the assault lest the Ravenwing outperform the 1st company. Seeing the bone white superhumans engage the Ogryns enraged the Praetorian’s commander and Commisar who charged into the fray.

Slowly the Praetorian’s flank began to collapse. Although the Praetorian’s flank began to fold, they continued to barrage the lascannon squads and saturated the Ravenwing and Deathwing troops with lasgun fire. The blistering lasfire cut through the Ravenwing’s armour and found weaknesses in the holy terminator armour. Subsequently, the Callidus Assassin who had remained hidden in the ruins sprang forth and her neuroshredder cackled bluish energy. 4 Dark Angels made sickening thudding noises as they dropped to their knees. However, a lone battle brother wrestled and dodged the Callidus’ blade long enough to allow his brothers to reposition before he was cut down.

Belial began singing hymns of vengeance to will his company forward as his lightning claws tore through the Inquisitor who would have prevented him from finding the Fallen. The lone lascannon squad unleashed righteous fury on the Callidus and purged her soul. Driven on by Belial’s will and seeing the Callidus finally succumb, the Whirlwind crew could not be left out and unleashed a salvo of rockets that obliterated all but 3 Rough Riders who in turn decided to flee for their lives.

Although there were still pockets of Praetorians in the ruins, Belial and his Dark Angels had succeeded in slaying the Praetorian’s commanders, Commisars, and the Inquisitor. Moreover, the Rough Riders were fleeing and Ogryn bodies lay broken on the ground. Alas, there was no sign of the aforementioned energy pulse and the trail of the Fallen had gone cold.

Result: Dark Angel victory.

Game 2 vs. Imperial Fists
This is Heavy Doc

Belial cursed the escape of the Fallen. As his 4th Company regrouped around him he noticed a familiar yellow banner half hidden under the dead Inquisitor. It seemed that the Praetorians were allied, for unknown reasons, with the Imperial Fists. Now Belial understood the brotherhood of the founding chapters was united, but if the Imperial Fists were interfering with the hunting of the Fallen then the yellow brothers needed to be purged as well. With that he raised the yellow banner and set it ablaze.

As the Imperial Fist’s banner burned the Dark Angel Scouts reported that another battle was commencing as yellow figures started taking up firing positions around the Dark Angels. Brother Enoch from the scout squad reported the opposition to the rest of the 4th Company stating, “2x 4 missile devastator squads, 1x 4 heavy bolter devastator squads, 2x las/plas, 2x missile/plas, and 2x plasma cannon/plas squads taking up positions. Also please note that there are 2 chaplains leading 2x assault squads with plasma pistols.”

Knowing that they were severely out gunned and out manned, the Dark Angels scurried for cover. While the Imperial Fists had an impressive amount of firepower, they had neglected two lanes of approach. Belial wanted to funnel his brothers through the alley, but the Dark Angels were slowed by the thought of spilling fellow Adeptus Astartes blood. It took quite awhile for the Dark Angels to engage and they shut out the cowardly taunts from the opposition as they hunkered down. On the other hand, the Ravenwing and Deathwing knew the seriousness of the situation and opened up with stormbolters and plasma guns. By utilizing cover and minimizing return fire the bone and black colored Dark Angels spewed forth holy fire that consumed the Imperial Fists.

Belial winced as he saw an Imperial Fist brother level a lascannon at his Predator and assumed that the venerable tank would be reduced to molten metal. However, the projectile glanced off of the front armour and the angered tank reduced the Imperial Fist squad to a pulp.

Even the Imperial Fists were apprehensive to assault the Dark Angels and their legs were slowed by these doubts. Yet the smoldering bodies of their troops urged them forward. A chaplain and his squad descended on the attack bike and plasma pistols scored direct hits on the engine killing the two Ravenwing brothers immediately. The assault squad landed next to the torched bike only to be assaulted by Belial and his Deathwing. Many terminators fell during the fight and the chaplain injured Belial before twin lightning claws sliced through the protective shimmer of the Rosarius.

The death of the chaplain caused the Imperial Fists to surge forward and engage the Dark Angels in brother on brother combat rather than shoot their weapons. This holy rage proved fruitful for the Dark Angels as Brother Thaddeus’ powerfist squished the other chaplain before he was knocked out of his bike’s seat by an Imperial Fist swinging a missile launcher.

The two Rhino squads rushed forward through the alley and the battle brothers threw open the top hatch to unleash hot plasma rounds. The landspeeders flew low right behind the Rhinos and their blessed ammunition joined the white hot plasma in piercing through yellow armor.

Again the Imperial Fist brother tried to destroy the Predator that had single handedly wiped out a squad of his brothers. The missile bounced harmlessly off of the tank’s armor. It was at this time that the Imperial Fists realized that their squads were mostly depleted under half, their religious leaders were dead, and the Dark Angels were reloading their plasma guns.

Brother Mattus lowered his bolter and called a cease fire. Belial and his remaining Deathwing terminator howled in rage and charged the Imperial Fist. Belial and Mattus stood eye to eye and Belial resisted the urge to plunge his claw through the other marine. Brother Mattus, his mind not clouded by the hatred generated by his chaplains, coolly spoke, “I know you and the Unforgiven seek the energy source that was detected here and believe it to be attributed to the Fallen. The Imperial Fists originally responded too, as Chaos activity was detected in this sector and we believed the energy source was a product of Chaos. We may seek to eradicate the same enemy. Let us cease our dispute and investigate further.”

Belial lowered his lightning claws and agreed with the astute Imperial Fist brother. The Imperial Fists agreed to set up a perimeter and rear guard to allow the Dark Angels to advance closer to the source of the energy source.

Result: Dark Angel victory

Game 3 vs. Daemons of Chaos – Tzeench
Crossed Orders - rolled Quadrants

The two Rhinos slowly advanced through the city. An oppressive cloud of fear spread through the city square. It seemed that the Fallen were close, or something was close. The rhinos performed a tactical withdraw and huddled in a corner. Scouts took up position in an abandoned ruin as the two lascannon teams spread out to provide covering fire.

All of a sudden the air began to crackle with unholy energies. With a horrific scream a shimmering winged giant slipped through a rift between the Chaos void and reality. The giant spread it’s wings and the avian head bobbed unnaturally as runes danced across it’s visage. Other portals opened and cackling Horrors spilled forth from the void. These Horrors were joined by sparkling Flamers that were vomited forth from the firmament.

Scout Pelonius’ hair stood up on his neck and he grasped his throat as waves of nausea wracked his body. A shimmering light appeared next to his head and waves of heat pulsed over his body. Alas he failed his training as his bolt pistol fell from his hands and he covered his ears to drown out the screams that tore at his mind. His fellow scouts noticed that daemons were attempting to burst into reality next to Pelonius and emptied bolt pistol rounds into the gaping maw of Chaos.

While the scout squad had stopped the incursion of Chaos, their victory was short lived as vulgar Horrors threw fire projectiles that incinerated the whole scout squad.

Belial, his Deathwing, the Ravenwing contingents and landspeeders, and Predators joined the fight and poured holy bolter rounds into the Horrors. The blessed ammunition and holy hymns penetrated the daemons and glittering lights danced where once gibbering daemons had stood. Dark Angel battle brothers charged the giant daemon as it was better to die to it’s unholy blade than to let it cast spells at will.

Screamers swooped from the sky and destroyed a Rhino. Belial realized he was too far away to deal with the flying daemons. But the Emperor shined down on him as he grabbed on to a passing Ravenwing biker and was pulled into the Tzeench Screamers. His lightning claws tore the daemon’s wings from the serpentine bodies.

On the other flank Flamers opened up unholy orifices that spewed daemonic corruption over the rest of the Ravenwing. The Predators and Dark Angels sought revenge by eliminating the dancing flames.

Belial knew that he could not reach the greater daemon before it tore apart his Predator. He knew that the greater daemon would destroy most of his vehicles and ordered the Dark Angels to spread to all quadrants to avoid destruction. Although it appeared that the Dark Angels were safe from the rampaging daemon, the air heaved again and more Horrors poured forth. Belial ordered a tactical withdraw and commanded Thunderhawk gunships to remove the Dark Angels from the situation as they were depleted from the battles with the Praetorians, Imperial Fists, and could not halt the incursion of Chaos. The Dark Angels withdrew to distant quadrants to force Chaos to chase only one squad.

Result: Dark Angels Victory

Right before Belial was picked up by the Thunderhawk he saw the air shimmer and lights sparkled all around him. A dark green figure was framed by glittering void and twin plasma pistols pointed at his head. Two white hot bolts of plasma seared his chest as he fell backwards into the gunship and the familiar voice of the Fallen laughed manically as the void swallowed up the dark green figure. Belial scowled and cursed. The Fallen remained elusive and had enticed the Dark Angels into open conflict with other Imperial troops prior to facing Chaos…

Overall Summary: 3-0, Overall RTT Winner.

Congrats on your victory with the Dark Angels. Fun reports to read too.

Any other Dakka-ites at the RTT, I know there are several down in SoCal?

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

There were several Dakka members there.

I did not hear about it until the day after. I was in LA this weekend, an I might have stopped by if I had known about it.

I was there, I went 3-0 and came in second.
Mat(Unseth) was there and went 2-1, losing to me.
Alpharius Walks was there also.

Nike did a great job and deserved to win the RTT after going 3-0 with his DA list.

Wow, nice games with an oddball list. I'd have bet money you couldn't do great with that list, but there's no way to argue with results. Well played Sir.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Well played indeed.

I have been trying to get a game against Nike for a while since Blackmoor played him at Kublacon, and had great things to say about him. Blackmoor never says anything great about anyone.
Sadly, Nike played some jedi mind-trick on the TO and made sure that we were not paired up at the RTT. I will have to try to get him next time.

Nice win. List looks Ravenwing with some balance from the DA's other options. Overall nice to see a balanced list win.

@Ozy: Thanks. I really couldn't remember turn by turn so I tried to give a connected story of the whole event.

@40K: It really was an odd-ball list. I was hoping to use the DA at the LVGT so I scrambled to get an additional 250pts for this one. It truely was a hodge-podge list cooked up with all the DA I own.

@Darrian13: I was hoping to play against you. I was hoping you would show up and I could learn a few things from you. Alas, the jedi-mind trick worked and I escaped for the time being. Your list is rock solid and it would've been a tough time for me to play for a tie versus you. Someday. Somewhere.

@Blackmoor: Too bad you weren't there. Looking forward to playing you again. Maybe sometime I'll cruise up to get in games vs. you and Darrian13 and learn new things as well.

@Lemartes: Any help with a DA list build could help. I threw together pretty much all the stuff I had and wanted to use green, white, and black. I'm sure there is a better combo.
