So one of these days I'll get around to collecting an ork army again, and when I do, this is the chap who will direct them in battle:

I've always wanted to have a "brain ork" running the show from behind the scense.

Let me know what you think!

(*edit: this guy is now done and cast and available to purchase in the swap shop! link on page 2*)

Official score:
+1 Ork
-1 somewhat slender for an Ork
+1 trenchcoat
+1 lapels
+1.4 pointing yet still looks tough
+18 monocle
Total: +21.4

Seriously, this is awesome work. My only suggestion (now keep in mind that this is 10x better than anything I ever sculpted) is that, without painting, he's slightly difficult to identify as an Ork. Maybe a broader chest or accompanying squig with monocle would help Orkify him. Keep up the great work.

Hahaha! Thanks, that ranking really made my day!

He is a bit thinner proportionately, but that's a result of me trying to straighten the posture and bring the proportions more in line with a standard humanoid. On the other hand, because of this, he is quite a bit taller than a regular ork, so what he lakes in bulk he makes up for in height. I wanted something a bit less feral than the plastic orks. Anyhow, if I find the time, I'll do a up a bodyguard of 'ardboyz for him, but who knows when that will be.

Thanks for the comment!

looks really cool, but i thought he was a human actually. maybe a larger more orkish head, and larger shoulders and upper back

Thanks Tylermenz... I'll be adding some details like tusks, which should make it clearer.

It kind of got away from me in the course of the sculpting, and ended up looking not very much like a gw ork...

stick his ass out more like the new 'fruta boyz' as we call em.

the first time I saw him I thought he was a guardsman.

idk, I remember in the ork book the brain orks that made the war orks to protect them. but they where smaller and had bigger heads or something like that.

A gun is a medium, a bullet a brush.

I'd have to second the 'mo orky. Nice sculpt nonetheless, I can't sculpt anything so I'm jelous.

Wash-away - I remember something about brain orks in the codex, but no-one knows what happened to them...

I know he'd look more orky with the bent-over posture, but I specifically wanted to have him standing straight & defiant.

Le Grognard - Thanks for the comments. You say you can't sculpt, but apparently you paint deathguard very well!

In the end, I may have to call him something else other than an ork. Someone suggested that I use him just as some sort of giant Abhuman, and I like that idea rather well.

That's very impressive. How did you form the thin edges on that monocle? I've been trying to create goggle lenses like this by pressing a piece of mechanical pencil lead into a dab of putty, but they always seem end up with thick, rounded outer edges.

Yeah, I would agree that if you don't give him the hunched-over orky stature, he needs bulking up quite a bit. I just thought he was an ugly human and wondered why he'd be leading orks.

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack

Thank you sir. I use a wooden clay sculpting tool that comes to a point. The point is well-rounded now from lots of use. I push a ball of putty on, then press the point into the center and work it in small circles, broadening the lens as I go. A little bit of hair- oil works well as a lubricant for small amounts of putty and keeps it from tearing. Good luck!

Hmm.... Yeah, maybe I'll bulk up the back/shoulders. I don't want to mess with the front too much (those buttons and lapels were hard!) but the shoulders/back could use some work. I'll see what I can get done tonight.

Cheers,

And this is my first time using the dakka photo dump, so here is a link to the very large pic of the the whole guy with the changes. I bulked out his back and shoulders somewhat, in addition to redoing the monocle and adding tusks and some more detail to his eye. Thanks for looking!

That's really awesome wish I could sculpt. Mine is a standard Ghaz with a grot loading the stikkbomb launcha on top of him all painted in a bright speed freak color scheme.

Thanks, goof. Ghaz is awesome right out of the box, no converting neccessary so you've nothing to worry about!

I like the changes - and if you're happy with them, that's what's really important. I'm afraid to do the type of bulking out I think would make him look really Orky you'd need to make some major changes to the model and I think you've done too nice of a job with him to do that.

I've only ever heard of "brain Orks" in ancient tomes of fluff that I can't even remember where. I've not seen pictures either, so let your imagination run wild. No reason why they have to look exactly like orks only smarter.
Oh yeah, that's an amazing sculpt by the way!

They are spoken of in the new codex, refered to as "Brainboyz" I had a mind of converting a one or two models to represent something like it but this just blew my brains to s**t. Again Nathonicus, well done mate, awesome job. I'll have to pu up my Warlord WIP tomoro some time.

Thanks Death, I'm inclined to agree and will probably just clean up and maybe cast this guy so I can keep the original.

Thank you! I do like this fellow as he is shaping up, and glad he strikes a chord with you as well.

I'm glad you like it, goof, but there's no reason you shouldn't go ahead and convert your idea.

Finished and ready to cast!

It'll take a few days to make a mold and get a resin copy cast, but I'll post when I've got one.

Got a single cast made before destroying my mold :(

Came out really well, but unfortunately I made some mistakes in the mold that required it to be partially destroyed while removing my model. No more Urethane rubbers for me! Next time, Silicone all the way.

My opinions pretty well echo the echos in here. I'm common like that. However, 2 things to add:

1. That is just a great execution of that idea! Really good show.
2. I am just fething DYING to see this thing painted. Please put up some more pics as you color him in?

Beautiful sculpt! Dont make it any more orky. His arrogant pose and face is awesome!

My only suggestions would be to give the dude slightly bigger boots. Maybe something orky like a metal jaw on one boot. And the hand behind the back needs to hold a gun

Get the thing painted!

Thanks! I don't have a game lined up for tonight (40k night at the LGS), so I will bust out my paints on this guy.

If I had an orc army I would buy a few of those off you. That's just great! Really, really impressive. Thanks for sharing, it came out really good. I see you said you trashed oyur mold doing it. You gonna re-do the mold, or just keep the master handy?

Thanks for the props, Grizgrin. I am going to redo the mold, and when I do, I'll make a few changes to the master. (I noticed one of the buttons was smaller than the others, fill in between the coat and the backside of the legs for easier demolding, etc.) This won't be until probably later this fall, as I'm about to move apartments and then my wife and I are going on a trip for a while, so probably round about September/October I'll be doing some more molding.

Anyone who would be interested in getting some models when the new molds are done should PM me with their email, and I'll update everyone after the delay.

Thanks!

I have to second everyone's thoughts at the beginning of the thread, I thought it was a human/IG guy too. After seeing it painted up and the details picked out, I love it, that's an awesome leader. Great job
