Hey guys. In my 11 years of painting I painted clean armies with basically no weathering or damage to them. Upon starting my Orc army I ran into trouble as I needed to paint rust on my warlord. As I'm taking as much time as I can on it I dont really want to use, "Tin bits basecoat, Drybrush Boltgun Metal, Wash with Chesnut Ink" Technique. Any experienced painters out there have any good tips to painting effective rust, especially on small sufraces such as armor engines, small pipes and obscured flat surfacing. Thank you all in advance!

Try a brown and blazing orange base and then boltgun metal and then any brown washes ...!
There are really many ways of doing this and U will have many responses I think ...

I picked up this awesome weathering kit from Micro Mark that is around 6 different colored powders. You can use them for lots of different things. I used the Red/Rust colored powder on my Ogres. You can see them here:

The rust powder is applied directly over a Boltgun Metal drybrush and it came out really well. You get green, black, red, and other colors (around 6 in all) in the kit. It is called Doc O'Brien's Weathering Powders.

"Tin bits basecoat, Drybrush Boltgun Metal, Wash with Chesnut Ink" I hate that technique as well, so in the past I have just used blazing orange wash and some watered down black ink....which does the trick.
What I am going to do for my Mega Armor Warboss Toegnasher is use a stippling technique. Basically, take an old brush with stiff bristles and cut the end flat. Then, in different reds, oranges and browns, I will use stipling to create a nice base rust layer. This will have to be done in different patterns. After that, stiple some areas with boltgun. What I am also going to try is a wash with Sepia, Ogryn and Black washes to tie it all in. Should come out pretty spiffy, but I haven't tried it with the new washes yet.

There was a (surprisingly useful) article on rust painting with 4 or 5 different methods in a WD at the time of the Ogre Kingdoms release. I have fallen back on that article several times, and highly encourage you to read it.

The weathering powders sound interesting, I'll have to check those out perhaps they will come in really useful for my trukks and looted land raiders. Nice.
Yea stippling is a technique I was looking into recently, Im just getting put off not knowing whether to use metallic browns for the rust or non metallic oranges/browns. And about that ogre article, yea I was just looking for it in my WDs, still no luck though, darn. Any Idea what was the issue number/cover picture?
Great Ideas so far guys.

Use non metallic browns and oranges. The only metallic you will need is the boltgun.

here's one i've been playin' with recently, and i like the oily result of this approach...
start with a base of p3 pig iron...
wash with a mix of p3 flesh wash, armour wash, and vallejo smoke(this should be a dirty brown kinda mix on the pallette...
follow this with a wash of pure smoke in the cracks and crevices...vallejo glaze medium is your friend with the washes...
then a mix of smoke and pig iron to define the metals again...
next is a mix of smoke and boltgun metal for a highlight...
finally a little pure mithril for the fine edges...
i just tried this on my latest warmachine mini commission, and unfortunately after all the hard work that i put in, it just didn't go with the rest of the clients army, so ipainted over it with cleaner metals...
i will definitely be applyin' it to drago when he comes out...
for orangey rust, i use bestial brown, and the a layer of orange mixed with a bit of smoke(over pig iron or boltgun), then a stipple of boltgun, and a fine edge highlight of mithril...tin bitz is a good base, but usually ends up covered by the next layers, so it seems a waste of time...
this is a tabletop level example of the orange rust, but i like the results of my first mix description better, as it's less "on the nose"...
cheers

Cheers mate! Ill look into it. tried the stippling didnt work too well seeing as Im working with small surfaces and the colored areas are already done, should have done tis first, meh. Either way gonna play around with a metallic rusting effect with dark receses. I'll keep you guys updated on how it's going, I'll post the pics of the outcome in a new topic too.

you could try the method i used for these -
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/213887.page
dark flesh basecoat, vermin fur then blazing orange hi-lite. finish off with flecks of boltgun metal on & around the edges.
the orange should also be 'splodged' on. you could also try texturing the surface 1st - i've used a mix of PVA, flour & cigarette ash (disgusting i know but it does work) to form a paste then apply. leave to dry then undercoat the model normally. this will leave a surface for the orange to stick to.

PVA, flour and cigarette ash, genious! That rust looks pretty nice. I got the metal through, ended up looking a little more like old dirty metal rather than rust but hey thats what Orks are all about... more fightin less lookin' after the stuff that gets you there.
That typhus just about pwns my one, I need to repaint it. Painted it about 3-4 years ago when I used to collect Death Guard, real awesome range of figures and awesome rules. Loved that army.
Respect.

The easy-peesy way I paint rust if I have a lot of it to do is with blazing orange over the metal and then brown ink in the crevices, or streaking the orange. Not as nice as some of these lovely examples, but quick!

Nice! Although I find the shading/rust around the bolts a bit too sharp and dramatic but, dont listen to my critique, he looks great! I used to paint mine a lighter color than GW studio ones. Started with some thin layers ofbronzed flesh, with a few green/brown/black watered down washes with some highlights oozes and things like that speed painting really but had a nice battlefield effect.
Edit: Give me your camera by the way!

yeah, the rust spots seem a bit much in the pics...
that's what test schemes are for!!!
i don't think i've ever painted a single mini that didn't make me wanna try something different after i saw the result...paintin' typhus showed me all the things i don't wanna do on my demon prince...then again, typhus wasn't painted up as a demon entry...
on the demon prince, i will go for a greyish tone on the armour, and a deeper, richer, result in the colours...i need to upgrade my bronze demon in his category to a gold!!!
when are ya gonna throw some pics up???
cheers

kewl, I threw some up in my WIP warlord thread, unfortunately my camera is incredibly crap, so I cant exactly take good ones at the moment and i dont have the funds for a new camera. Although Ive just finished stripping 6 Nobz, a Warlord which isnt big enough for the role and is serving as yet another nob, a bunch of stikk bombs, 4 heavy weapon orks and a mek boy so pics galore by the time i get a new cam
Edit: Forgot to mention the three Lobba guns and 6 grots <3

What I use is chainmail, washed with chaos black, wash with vermin brown, and again with a thin coat of vermin brown, then if you like, you can stipple on some blazing orange. The effect can be seen in my log "The Restless Dead", is quick and rather effective if I may say so myself.

I tried your rust technique bubber, and I really like it, but its more heavy duty "lied there for 20 years" type rust, Gonna use for my vehicles and bases, Not really suitable for my Orks armor at the moment though, they arent as bad at hygene as nurgle even Orks have standards.
Need some sort of texture to it though gonna try that cigarette ash thing >_> maybe even some really fine sand.

I am not a "lots of rust" sort of painter, "less is more" better fits me I guess so I do it in smll parts here and there to try to make the over all impression its sounds like your looking for. I did a few new nobs for my ladz a while back. Here are a few pics to see if this is what your looking for.
Its chared brown in a random irrgular pattern where you want the rust, then stipple the orange over it leaving a thin outline of the brown showing over about 80% of te shape. Test the orange colors till its the one you like I prefer the more yellow one but its what looks good to you. Then I add a glaze of Vellejo Smoke with some glaze medium added to blend it all in. I also use the smoke over a good bit of my metalics along with black galze from Velljo model color line. The black knocks the shine off the metalics and gives them a more beaten aged look, and the smoke is liquid dirt basicly. GW's sepia ink may do simailar things. Hope it helps
