Hi all.

I have not seriously played 40k since mid 3rd, which I did not enjoy massively. What I saw in 4th did not really change my opinion, but from what I have seen of 5th so far in my local store, I think I should give it a go. I want to play semi-competatively, not too tough not too weak, so I came up with this:

Farseer, Singing Spear and Pistol, RoWarding, Spirit Stones, Doom, Fortune (joins wraithguard unit in the WS)

5 Wraithguard, Warlock with Singing Spear and Pistol, Destructor, in a Wave Serpent with TL Shu Cannon and Spirit Stones

5 Fire Dragons

6 Striking Scorpions (Incl Exarch with Claw and CCW, plus Infiltrate)

10 Dire Avengers (incl Exarch whom has a Shimmershield and PW, Defend and Bladestorm) in a Wave Serpent with TL Shu Cannon and Spirit Stones

5 Pathfinders

5 Pathfinders

4 Jetbikes, 1 x Shu Cannon

Falcon, Pulse Laser, Shu Cannon, Shu Cannon, Spirit Stones, Holofield

The general idea on my part is a mainly shooty list with a small amount of CC in the Scorpions, and a medium amount of combat sponges like the DA ant the WG. There is a small amount of anti tank in the list, perhaps worryingly low, but from what I have seen locally, heavy tanks are being dropped in favour of more bodies, so for the time being, it should not hurt me too much.

This unit is going to have issues. The primary problem you will have is that doom and fortune are both cast at the beginning of the turn. If you are inside a transport, you can't cast these psy powers. So the turn your guys get out of their transport, they won't have the benifit of either power. What you may want to do is run these guys on foot and give the wave serpent to the fire dragons. This would mean that the dragons could be transported and it would free up your flacon to either act as a main battle tank (sitting still more or less in cover) or allow it to be a transport for the scorpions...which ever works out better for you.

The other option would be to just drop the wave serpent all together and spend the points on a warlock with conceal and a couple extra wraithguard.

6 Striking Scorpions (Incl Exarch with Claw and CCW, plus Infiltrate)

I wouldn't recommend using infiltrate on these guys. If the rest of your army is sitting back and shooting, you don't want this squad sitting out in the middile of the field asking to be shot. Just have them hang back with your main lines (or follow up behind the wraithguard).

Falcon, Pulse Laser, Shu Cannon, Shu Cannon, Spirit Stones, Holofield

Unless you are hurting for points and can't find them anywhere else, the double cannon falcon is kind of a waste. If you move more than 6", you can only fire one of your weapons. In addition, 2 of your guns only have a 24" range, so you are going to be forced to move to get into range in the first place. Now you have a couple of options of what to do. For your optional weapon, I would suggest either a missile launcher or a star cannon. The missile launcher gives you options. You can either shoot it at strength 8, giving you some extra tank busting power when combined with the puls laser and slow (under 6") movement. Or, you can fire it as a S4 blast. In this mode, it becomes a defensive weapon and you can move 12" and still fire it along with the puls laser. The star cannon on the other hand, requires that you keep your tank moving slowly (6" or less) to fire, but it complements the puls laser as being a multi shot, AP2 weapon. So if you see terminators frequently, then this may be a good setup for you.

Threads should be like skirts: long enough to cover what's important but short enough to keep it interesting.

Thanks for the comments, everything seemed very reasonable to me. I have dropped the transport and added some more WG (as they are the reason I'm playing Eldar) and dropped infiltrate on the scorpions (and added and extra guy there). EML on the Falcon as it seems like a good flexible weapon.

Cheers.
