Hey everyone?
With the upcoming release of the new Space Marine Codex I'm preparing to start marines for the first time. I'm not interested in any of the main favorite chapters, but I would like to make a chapter that has some written back stoyry so I have decided to go with the Iron Snakes after reading Dan Abnett's amazing book "Brother's of the Snake." This book was simply fantastic to read and now I would like to bring the chapter to life. I've seen the Iron Snakes done excellently before and I would like to try it out as well.

However, most of the armies I paint are those which I can dip, but I don't want to have to limit my choices because of what armies look good dipped so I plan to use the new washes for this army because I'm not the greatest painter. As to the shoulder pads I plan to use the dowloadable decal sheets found on BoLS.

My questions are, what would be a good way to paint the iron snakes with the washes to make them look good? I was thinking of a main boltgun metal body with a Badab Black wash and using a thin line black technical pen to outline the white parts. What combination of colours would you reccomend for this paint scheme? Also, has anybody tried making their own decals before with the BoLS sheets. I know they have a great tutorial on ow to mak them, but I was just wondering how well it works and how well the final effect of the decals is or if the decal stays on the model for a long time.

Thanks

Lucas

I've never used a decal, so I couldn't speak from personal experience.. but there is a Dakka article about making custom decals and there are some pics that I'm sure could give you an idea of how they look.

My center is giving way, my right is in retreat; situation excellent. I shall attack.

Lucas,

I can't begin to describe how easy it is to make a good looking (table top standard) metallic marine.

Prime them black, do a heavy drybrush of boltgun, wash them with a thinned out black, let it dry, and then hit it with a light dry brush of mithril silver.

For the white portions, paint them with a thinned out layer of astronomicon grey first, and then skull white on top of that.

And I've used "do it yourself" transfers for my Flesh Tearers. They're fairly easy to print off (although I had bad luck with a canon printer) - I've used Epson with no trouble. They last as long as anything else if you: 1) gloss coat the shoulder pad (or area to add transfer to), 2) use decal setting solution, 3) when dry, add decal softening solution, 4) let dry thoroughly and then dull coat the pad to remove the gloss. You won't even know its a decal. \

I got my decal paper from micromark.com

Bolter and Chainsword, in their modelling section, in the stickies at the top, has a pile of decal sheets for the lesser known chapters free for download (I'm sure I saw Iron Snakes in there). Size them up, print 'em out (oh, and if you're using an inkjet, make sure you use a decal fixative on the decal sheets to lock in the ink. If you use a color laser, you're good).

I can post a pic to show you my results if you want.
