Hey guys,
I need help finding a replacement product for GW's brown ink. Is there any product that has the same consistency and color?
Thanks in advance,
Darrian

I'm in the same boat. I use a lot of brown ink in basing.
I tried Higgins brown ink, but it's noticably redder, and also seems to bleed if re-wetted (such as when glueing flock over the inked sand). So, I'd cross that one off the list.

I used Brown Ink on the figs below on top of Bleached Bone then built up with drybrushing. Switched over to Devlan Mud Citadel Wash and I'm not dissapointed. I use Ogryn Flesh on my empire troops for faces with the same effect. Devlan is darker than Ogryn, so you actually now have 2 brown washes to use. Hope that helps.

I'm hesitant to use the washes.. prefer to mix my own
I stocked up on as much ink as I could in advance.. if you look around a lot of retailers still have some.
a bottle should get you through an army unless you're being wasteful.. so a sufficient supply shouldn't be too hard to get

I use inks constantly and will soon need replacements too. The owner of the FLGS suggested Winsor & Newton inks. However, W&N have two types of ink: Calligraphy and Drawing. I don't know which type to use, and since they're not commonly in stock at local art stores, I have yet to perform tests.

I've got my fingers crossed-if they get the same results as GW inks, I'll gladly buy the whole set.

Dr. Ph. Martin's bombay india ink is perfect. Get the full set off of dickblick and it's a huge bargain. (If you need all the colors)
I don't use ink too often any more but it's just like the gw stuff, waterproof once dry, water based etc.

I use Vallejo game colour inks, they're designed to be an exact match for the GW inks. If that's what you're after, go with the vallejo brown ink, I use it all the time and give it two thumbs up.

Great answer Greebynog. I love Vallejo paints, I just never got around to trying their inks. Will do ASAP.
Thanks

I've used Vallejo smoke as a substitute with pretty good effect, but I'd join the chorus saying try different art/india-style inks. My black and red inks came from the local art shop and are great. You should be able to get brown in the same way.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.
I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil |
