I couldn't figure out where to put this, so I hope it's ok here.
I currently play Dark Eldar, and, while I love the pointy little buggers, I'm thinking it's time to try something new. I'm just not sure which path to take.
I know what I don't want; No Eldar (I just really don't like them), No Orks (Too many models to buy), No Space Marines (Cliche!)
Right now I'm thinking Daemonhunters, but I'm not sure.
Any suggestions, tips or ideas are welcome. I'm going to my flgs tomorrow, so I need quick advice. Thanks in advance!

Daemonhunters? No!
Witch Hunters are better, more variety, nice models, more flexible to use.

I'll second this. With Witchhunters you can make an army that is characterful, nice to look at, and is useless on the battlefield (Circus Freaks...), but you can also make a list that will be hard as nails with 5E that will also look really great on the field (Sisters). Witchhunters will cost more than many other armies because of the general lack of plastic troops, but it's got great looking minis.

I am gonna give you the same cliche advice i got, "just browse the codexes and pick something you think you will enjoy playing." Ok not thats thats over I think there are alot of fun options out there Necrons thoough borring as all get out to paint have alot of unique game mechanics and decent models, Tau overly shooty no assult(well relatively) nuff said, Eldar good but over done at least there are out here, Deamons have some interesting aspects to them not to mention you can use them in Fantasy or 40k win win or is it, Tyranids are great if you like modding things since you can add some really stunnign effects to them with some simple green stuff additions.
Well thats my 2 cents times 30 or so lol. Don't know if that helps but alteast it is a direct response.

I've thought about Tau and 'Nids. They both seem like cool choices. But I'm also still leaning towards Daemonhunters. Witchhunters look cool, but I don't know...
However, there IS something about having hordes of ravenous bugs pouring across the battlefield to feast upon the flesh of their enemies. And there IS something about having units of high tech Fire Warriors skimming around in Devilfish and blasting their enemies before zooming off and letting the Hammerheads blow stuff to smithereens. And there IS something about having some Grey Knights beating up everything in their path.
Decisions!
My friend is trying to deter me from 'Nids or Tau and trying to steer me into Daemons. I'm not sure I like Daemons anymore though.

Nids are very cool and they have an incredibly demanding prescence on the board if you give them the right paint scheme. Grey knights are sweet but they are also a pricey army. However, if money is not an option then no worries. Obviously I am a Tau player so I am going to avoid talking you into Tau just because I like them. Deamons are..........uh......unique........
Keep your options open I still say read all the codexes/codecies <----(no idea which is actually proper) and find the play style that fits you best. But I can understand the feeling of wanting to play almost every army because well they are all fun.

I'd say it depends on your style. Judging by the fact that you play DE, you're a move, shoot, and HtH guy. If you're wanting to go with a mainly CC army, then go Nids. If you wanna go with a really fun shooty army... go with Tau!

I'm leaning towards Tyranids and dare I say it... Space Marines, right now. I know I said earlier that they are cliche, but they are pretty sweet, and I love the models.
I'm gonna read through both those Codexes and a few others tomorrow, so I'll decide after that.

I can't blame you I was drawn towards SM's too but when I went to my local hobby store and saw 6 people with marine variant armies I just figured being different would be more fun lol. Not to mention SM mechanized armies are going to be a pain in the ass with 5th out(thank you EMP grenades!! ). You will never run out of themes with SM they have so many options and variants you will be inundated with choices.

I'm gonna try and stay away from the Marines, but if they are the best choice then I'm going for them. However, the Tyranids and the Tau are still good options.
Since you're a Tau player, could you recommend what I should buy to start out if I do decide on them, and some of their strengths and weaknesses. I already know they're great shooters and horrible hand-to-hand fighters.

Both Tau and Tyranids are fun. Both very different however.
The benefits of tau are :
1. Very shooty. They have the strongest infantry weapon in the game
2. Very mobile. Crisis suits and devilfish/hammerheads and stealth suits are all fun, mobile units.
In general, go with tau if you would like to go shooty. They can be extremely static or mobile, depends how you want to play. I'd be inclined to go with static as you have played Dark Eldar, and I presume you want something new
Choose Nids if you want an army that will rip others apart in CC. Once again, this army is very customisable and you can tailor it to your needs. I have a 1750 point nid army that has very limited guns, but performs extremely well. It does struggle against fully mech armies but meh.
Hope this helps

Necrons.
Slow-moving mechanical undead death-bots are a very different flavor from Dark Eldar.
Plus low model count.

Y a know there will be alot of conflicting views about the best way to build and play Tau, I just ran with what the army is best at....... shoot stuff and then run away lol. I would recomend Broadsides or Hammer heads, I am a mech fan so I will always favor Broad sides to Hammer heads just on looks, but sadly Hammer heads are a bit better due to thier armor and the fact they are a tank. Fire warriors should be your bread and butter IMHO they look great and pulse rifles just destroy anything on foot and EMP grenades are a good solution to things like Monliths or LR's both types. Devilfish are pretty expensive points wise but they are great for toting your FW's and keeping them out of trouble until you want to start it.
Alot of people run hordes and hordes of kroot since they can handle CC and are rediculously cheap in points, I personally hate kroot so I do not use them. It is hard for me to give you an idea of models to buy because it depends on how you want to run your Tau army whether you want "troop shooty", Mechanized, Suit/Heavy weapon spam, or horde rush with kroot and having Tau heavies to offer fire support. You would have to give me a more clear intent on what you would want your Tau army to do.

Ok, so Tau are looking like the way to go.
I'm thinking I want a lot of Fire Warriors (max unit size is 12, right?), having most of them in Devilfish, with lots of heavy guns shooting pie plates of death.
Hmmm, this is sounding like fun already!
Also, I have about 115$ right now for tomorrow, and I'm getting paid again this thursday, which means another 130$-145$.
I'm thinking of getting a pack of Fire Warriors and a Devilfish for now, and then maybe another pack of Fire Warriors and a Hammerhead when I get my next paycheck.

=) well before you make up your mind tonight be sure to look around with an open mind tomorrow still browse the codexes just for reference if anything. Fire warriors are fun to build I will give you this one warning about FW's though they have alot of mold lines so before you do your glueing you will have a couple hours of mold line cleaning well that if you are an OCD perfectionist like me. I absolutly hate that the best positioned and painted model in the world will be reduced to crap if you miss major mold lines.
Tyranids are fun too (I watched a single uberstealer slaughter 5 marins over the weekend was funny as hell), although the pie plates of death you speak of Tau don't have so much of, Hammer heads get submunition which is an template but even with 3 Hammerheads you only have 3 templates perturn. The real power of Tau is the sheer valume shooting and obscene distanance they are capable of while still being very very mobile.

Well, you have to remember that I play Dark Eldar now. They have... 0 large blast templates. Yeah. So 3 per turn is a big improvement for me
But I will go in with an open mind, and I'll spend some time reading through codexes.
But is it true that if the Tau HQ(s) go down, the rest of the army panics and runs? My friend told me that, so I'm kind of wondering.

No thats not true the only circumstance that happens is if your HQ is an ethereal and it dies you have to make a morale check if you fail then you flee, however if you succed you get the enemy preferred rule for the rest of the game which can win you the game in the right circumstances. I use Black sun as my hq cause she is a tank raping machine she gets 4 twinlinked melta shots pershooting phase with 3+ normal save and a 4+ invuln on top of the fact she travels with 2 sheild drones that can absorb wounds for her =) not to mention she is only 175 points.

Fire Warriors have a choice of two weapons : Pulse Rifle 30" range, 5 S, 5 AP Rapid Fire or Pulse Carbine 18" range, 5 S, 5 Ap, Assult 1, Pinning
And I Said the thing about Shadow sun wrong I get 2 shots in the shooting phase with the Twinlinked meltas and 4 shots in assault so 6 shots per turn with a S8 AP 1 Assult weapon =) my bad.

Ya her weapons are both assult 1's she carries 2 Fusion Blasters she has a natural 4 attacks 5 BS 4 WS 3 wounds but has 3 drones around her to soak up the hits so more like 6 actual wounds. oh she also has leader ship 10 and the ability that as long as she is still alive you can use her leader ship for your troops moral tests and pinning tests instead of thier own this just makes her worth having IMHO.

Well if you can afford it what I do for Devilfish w/Fire warriors is you can get a pack with 8 FW's and 1 Devilfish(it is kind of a special release thing that GW did for 5th coming out) for only 15 dollars more then just a devilfish or a set of 12 fire warriors. Then you can buy a set of fire warriors for normal price and you then have 20 FW's and a Devilfish for 15 more then you would have spent if you just bought 12 Fw's and a Devilfish. Pretty good deal IMHO. Broad sides at local shop are 31.50 a piece so not too bad either
