Referencing the statement on p. 19. I know the proper and fair thing to do is to pick up the failed rolls and leave the successes on the table. That way you're less apt to just start grabbing dice, because if you pick up a success, it just became a fail. I can hear the arguement now from TFG: "It says to pick up your successes, it's in the rulebook, that's the way it is done."
Actually heard that while watching a game at the local FLGS. So in the 5th Ed. FAQ they should state that text in the grey boxes are suggestions to improve your play experience. Not rules, or cannon. 'Tis a shame you have to point that out to people, but hey, TFG wouldn't be TFG then.

Of all the BS things anyone could actually say during a game, and actually mean it, that has to be the most asinine one among them. I honestly didn't think people of that caliber actually existed, but yet again, humanity's shallow end of the gene pool rears its ugly head.
That speed rolling section is only a friendly suggestion and not actually a rule. While I do this, everyone has their own rolling style and I won't hinder such a personal playing style (some people I know take dice rolling very seriously).

Moz:
You: "Hold on, you rammed, that's not a tank shock"
Me: "Ok so what is a ram, lets look at the rules."
Rulebook: "A ram is a special kind of tank shock"
You: "So it's a tank shock until it hits a vehicle, and then it's a ram, not a tank shock, and then it goes back to being a tank shock later!"
Me: "Yeah it doesn't really say any of that in here, how about we just play by what's written in here?" |

I read that very section and wondered what GW was thinking.
Will this rule make the game go any faster? Yes, in a way it will. The dice in your hand are the ones you are going to roll anyway, so you cut the huuuuge waste of time and blatant misuse of resources, it takes to put the failed ones aside and pick up the rest. (/sarcasm)
In my group we remove "failed" dicerolls as well. I always suggest that my opponent does the same.

Hold on Steelmage. Take a step back and look at the big picture:
Doing some basic, preliminary research while reading the rules (and extrapolating the data from the dice rolling dakka article), I've found that I roll fails more than successes. On average that nets to about 2983742 misses per day. Now, that extra inch-and-a-half thats necessary to pick up the failed die may not seem like much, but do some conversion: that's around seventy extra miles I'm moving my arm per day. Now, I roll more than most folks, so I figure that if I'm moving my arm an extra 70 miles, the average user is probably moving only about 68 miles per day. I'm not an expert, but from what I gather from 60 Minutes, I'm probably burning calories equivalent to those I would take in consuming an entire cow. We know that forfty percent of cows are fed on the burning corpses of amazon rainforest trees. I saw a movie once (starring Sean Connery and someone else) in which they found the cure for cancer in the Amazon! And think of all the heat emitted from those trees, coupled with the MEGAJOULES of energy being emitted in the form of heat from the burning of the cows (for food) each day, per person. Now, INSFBCL (I'm Not Some Fancy Big City Lawyer), but you don't have to be the inventor of the intarweb to know that that much heat escaping into the atmosphere is at least quintupling the effects of Global Warning every year.
Pick up fails instead of successes ? Is there really any question? Is there really any choice?
Think of the children. And their melty ice-cream cones.
And cancer.

I've played a few people that pick up their successes or all their dice and then do the next roll. The easist way to deal them is to make sure you watch the rolls and count the successes yourself.
Then make sure the guy says something like "six hit" and giving you a chance to agree or disagree before doing the next lot of rolling.
I feel that picking up successes is perfectly legitimite .... IF ... you first tell your opponent how many successes you have and then let him check before picking up any dice.
Personally ... I feel it's good gaming ettiqute to allow your opponent to inspect your dice before you pick any up (success, failure or the whole lot).

You need to stop playing IG and switch to SM's. That one simple change will increase your hitting percentage by 50%. Just think of all the calories saved.

Yeah, but you're a gamer... So, you're probably fat... So, you could use the extra 2 miles of exercise.

The problem with that method of "speed rolling" doesn't really lie with the people who will actively use it to cheat (a very small minority I'm sure)... it's more with the people who might do something unintentionally. People's dice can have all kinds of goofy patterns on them, and I've seen on plenty of occasions someone pick up a dice that I thought had a 2 on it and they said it was a 3. I believed them... they're mostly friendly games, and their face was right over the dice as opposed to my oblique angle. However, who's to say once it gets picked up?
Or situations where someone's unclear of what rolls they're looking for. You charge in with your Marines against the Eldar Avatar and roll your hits, and start picking up your 4+'s like you expect, not realizing you need 5's to hit. Your opponent notices about halfway through that you picked up a 4 and mentions it... oops. How many of the ones you picked up were 4's compared to 5-6's? Who knows? But if you had picked up the fails, then it's easy to point out that 4 also fails and get rid of those too, leaving only 5's and 6's.
I think that scenario will be much more common than people intentionally picking up the wrong dice, and it might not be all that uncommon if one person is not totally sure about some of the other person's units. I for one will not be picking up my successes at any point.

Quite frankly, I doubt that comment in the rulebook will alter the way most people roll their dice.
It's not a rule. It's a comment that they (the people writing the rules) find it fastest to do it that way.
