Hi all, p52 of the 5th ed rulebook says that "all jump infantry units may enter the battle by 'deep strike'...". The same section on Jump Infantry explicitly states that Warp Spiders are a Jump Infantry unit.

My question is, does this mean that Warp Spiders can Deep Strike without having an Exarch with the Surprise Assault power which would confer the ability to the under under 4th ed rules? Or does the Codex take precendence and the fact that the Warp Spiders entry makes no reference to deep striking apart from in the Exarch powers unlike the Swooping Hawk entry which specifically states they can deep strike under their wargear section?

Thanks for your thoughts

Unless the wording state that Deep Striking is impossible without the Exarch (and not just imply it), then it seems that you can indeed Deep Strike without the Exarch.

Another FAQ entry that GW missed?

I think so. Since Warp Jump Generator means you count as Jump Infantry, it pretty much makes Suprise Assault useless.

I'd like them to FAQ it to allow Deep Strike on T1. They can already make their assault move when they Deep Strike, but that would be a good option otherwise IMHO.

No FAQ necessary IMO. No reason to ever pay points for surprise assault, as the spiders now come with that ability.

Thanks for the comments all - you've reinforced my interpretation. No surprise assault needed then!

Surprise assault lets you deep strike even in missions that do not normally allow it. So while all the standard missions do normally allow it and it would be a waste in these situations, there could be missions that come up where it is not allowed and surprise assault could be useful. I realize that this isn't going to come up often, but it is an important point to note.
