So, last Friday the group was going through our normal routine when we decided that we were just sober enough to get in an Apocalypse game to say farewell to V4. At first, I was just going to play two of my armies but we had a last minute addition of a rookie
40K ork player to the lineup meaning that it would be my armored company, a necron phalanx, and an ork horde vs an ultramarine chapter master reunion, a demon hunter force and a white scars bike club.

Deployment
Our team won the bid with 10 minutes for setup but it didn’t matter anyway since one of the opposing team members had taken “Jammers” as their strategic asset. Without being able to plan anything we went about silently setting up our models. Thankfully one of the opponents took mercy on our rookie player by at least telling him that this was the time for him to set up his army and correcting him when he set up his units too close to no-man’s land etc. So, needless to say there wasn’t any plan at all in our deployment! My own plan was to set down my asset – “Disruptor Beacon somewhere toward the back to cover our own side, but other than that none of us had any idea what to do as we just threw down our models trying not to get in each other’s way. After we were done all I could do was groan when the opposing team didn’t set anything up on the table at all.
Turn 1 US
The only excitement of the turn is when the Necron Phlanx makes it’s appearance while one of the warrior squads repositions itself within it’s protective triangle. Everything else repositions for the inevitable surprises that will be coming on from every board edge.
Turn 1 OP
With nothing on the board the opponents spend their turn playing Ikari Warriors, stopping only when one of them becomes stuck behind a wall.
Turn 2 US
We treat this turn just like the last one as we make our last minute adjustments to await the storm. I also bring on a tank from the backfield that I forgot to deploy at the start.
Turn 2 OP
Again, nothing enters the board this turn as far as opposition goes but the Demon Hunters do land a Lance Strike and a Melta Strike or something like that right into a Russ and a unit of Necrons that was using a ruined shed for cover. Our team decides to end the game here but later we are convinced to play two more turns as well.
Turn 3 US
The rest of the ork force enters the field using “Flank March” which of course triggers the Ultramarine player’s “Ambush” asset. Luckily for us only two Kommandos get killed and a wound is put on Snikrot. It should also be noted that the Necron player had taken the scheduled bombardment thingy as his asset too and chosen turns 1,2, and 3 to use it on so the last of those shots falls harmlessly onto the table during this turn.
Turn 3 OP
The opposing team decides that this is where the game will start and deploys their forces in the pockets we have left for them. A unit of bikes comes in between the Phalanx and my tanks at the top and immediately destroys my Command Tank while the speeders have a horrible round of shooting killing only two of the Necron warriors (who later make their
WBB rolls). Two Land Raiders sneak into the Necron Phalanx though and the masters of the chapter, an honor guard, and Sicarius destroy the Necrons there in close combat. Only the Lord remains. The White Scar librarian biker makes a turbo charge onto the table nearby and some inquisitorial transports show up behind him along with a Culexus assassin to destroy the remaining kommandos. One of the Grey Knight Terminator squads mis-drops onto a Monolith and a unit of grey knights gets confused by my Disruptor Beacon and repositioned in front of a Shok Attack Gun toting mek, but the other two units drop perfectly and destroy the trukk carrying the mega armored nobz pinning them. The
def dread and nearby truck are destroyed or stunned or something (my notes are kind of hazy on this one). The truck right next to it is also destroyed along with the looted vehicle. At least the lootex vehicle manages to explode and kill 3 White Scar bikers though when it goes up! The Demon Hunter dreadnought fires point blank and charges the russ right in front of it but can’t seem to hit it since the tank crew taped a pizza box over it’s vision slit. The unit of grey knights that I repositioned near the Shokk Attack Gun uses their flamers to annihilate the poor mek. …D’OH! Meanwhile, a unit of deepstriking terminators led by a chaplain are misdirected by my Disription Beacon to end up right in front of a Leman Russ, along with two other tanks, two units of boyz and some lootas. They choose to fire at the closest threat (the Russ) but fail to damage it meaning that one objective may actually be safe for us to hold on to! As the capper on the round a Grey Knight Master teleports right next to the Baneblade and fumbles his Vortex Grenade to a “close but not quite” position.
Turn 4 US
The Baneblade likes seeing power armored troops set up in tight little circles around it so it loads up it’s weapons and gets ready to party. Unfortunately, though the crew had all simultaneously lost their contacts and they can’t seem to see more than 15” because of the Grey Knight’s “Shrouding” powers. The few shots it gets though it capitalizes on as it picks off a landspeeder with a lascannon and shakes the Dreadnought with another. It also finishes off the Master that was sitting a few feet from the hull which meant it was a perfect shot for an insta-killing Demolisher round fired point blank. Meanwhile the Warboss becomes excited and charges into the Grey Knight Terminators which instantly kill him as the rest of the Orks laugh. The Necron lord is cut to shreds as the Monoliths charge up their weapons and fire in a powerful display of energy that looks really impressive but fails to cause any damage on anything whatsoever. Nightbringer just looks on and mutters something like “crap, well I guess it’s up to me then” as he charges a nearby unit of White Scars bikers toward the top of the table destroying two of them along with an attack bike. The remaining Necron Warriors step up and blow away two speeders and shaking a third while the Leman Russ and Destroyer can only manage to shake the Landraider in their sights. The Vanquisher can’t quite seem to see the dreadnought loitering near the board edge at the bottom, but thankfully, one of the Leman Russ’s behind the Baneblade remembers that in the 40th millennium there are binoculars and fires a battle cannon round right into the clustered Grey Knights across from it killing all but one. The Terminators in our backfield are fired at and charged but manage to make all but one their armor saves while cutting a swath through their attackers. The Leman Russ at the bottom of the table also fails to see any of it’s target Grey Knights but a couple more bikes get taken out in the cluster of assaults going on nearby.
Turn 4 OP
I declare that this is the last turn as I can’t stand the pain any longer. The Terminators in the backfield manage to wipeout the remaining boyz in contact with them. The Vortex Grenade finally drifts onto the Baneblade taking off one structure point as the nearby Flash Gitz are run off of the objective by two White Scars bikers. The shaken dreadnought lumbers up and tears the tank in front of it in half leaving the boyz the only scoring unit we have on that objective. They in turn get annihilated by the Grey Knights in an assault though so we don’t have to worry about that for long. More assaults along the lower table edge see still more orks getting wiped out as a unit of Inquisitorial storm troopers hop out of their transport to attach their Melta-Bombs to the Deff Dread causing it to explode. The Librarian charges the recently un-pinned Noba and makes short work of them. The Ultramarines don’t bother to do anything since they already cover the objective as Nightbringer finishes off the bikers in contact with him before throwing his scythe and heading to the locker room with a pissed look on his face.

OP - 3
US - 2
Post Battle Report:
I have to admit that I have underestimated the Jammer asset in the past. I thought it would be kind of annoying but other than that, whatever. That has to be the single most powerful asset I have seen used in a game! That completely started us off flat footed and when the other team didn’t set up on the board it just compounded the issue. I felt like the entire game I was one move behind and our team kept making tactical moves that didn’t compliment each other. That coupled with really bad rolling made for a game that quickly went into the toilet for us. Go figure! Bad Rolling + Bad Tactics = Lose! I should write a book! I was also disappointed with my chosen asset, “Disruptor Beacon.” I’m glad I finally chose it since I’m making my way through all of the assets but it really fell flat in this game. Out of 6 units that deep struck within it’s range I managed to reposition 2. It’s just not worth it to have such a random effect on an asset that’s already gambling it will be used at all! As always, it‘s just a good time to get together with the gang and push our little toys around the table though. This Friday we’ll probably do it all again with the
V5 rules. If you think you know awesome you should really tune in for my next report since I plan on arguing every single new rule without even bothering to take my own book out of my (chick-magnet) Cadian backpack.
