Is that what 5th Edition is about?
Seems to me, after my first game in 5th, and watching several others play 5th, the game is about contesting everything. Getting anything other than a draw is nearly impossible.
In tournament settings, I can see the "Draw... then see victory points" as standard. So, in an effort to make the game more fun... it pretty much is just "destroy your enemy" in each mission making sure to hold/contest everything.
I will be missing the Alpha missions the most as they had the most interesting outcomes to me...

There will initially be many draws, but as we get used to the new play style and add more troops choices, you'll start seeing more victories.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k. Rule #1 - BBAP

Yeah, it's definitely just growing pains right now. People have to become more objective based in the way they play the game before you start seeing viable strategies played out on the tabletop to effect a wins on a more reliable basis.
I'm thinking the real key is to commit to certain objectives based on board placement and maintaning presence in those sections. I think in future games I'm going to only use the 'contest' move as a last few turns attack.

Trying to take every objective isn't going to work. I think most armies will be better off taking and defending an objective and then working to contest the others...That is if you're not just trying to all out eliminate your opponent's army.

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack |

There have always been some missions in RTT/GT's that your army may not be suited to win, so you just have to play for the draw.
Last week I was playing Grey Knights at an RTT and we played "Capture and Control" with a "Dawn of War" deployment against a CSM army. I knew before deployment that my army was too slow and too fragile to get across the battlefield and contest his objective while protecting mine, so I played for the draw.

I thought GW redeisigned the missions to result in a draw all the time so that none of us have to deal with bruised ego?

Right - that's the "fun" factor they've tried to re-inject into the game with this edition.

Nah.
GW got tired of people complaining that the game was essentially won with the first toss of the die to choose who goes first.
They simply fixed it such that now it doesn't matter what you roll at the beginning...
...or at any other point in the game.
I, for one, welcome our new TLOS, cover saving, objective contesting overlords, and will endeavor to Use Tactics™ in order to fully subjugate my opponent.
If I ever decided to dust off my 40k armies and remove my tongue from my cheek, that is.
