One of my friends has just started up a chaos army. He’s fairly new to 40k so I think he’s going with Black Legion for an all-rounder approach. I’ve never played as or against chaos before, so I was wondering if there was any advice you could give me about both using chaos space marines and fighting, primarily with orks. How does a chaos army generally play and are there any particular units I should particularly watch out for?
Thx

Well, I'd take two Daemon Princes with wings, MoS, and lash, and 3x2 Obliterators.
If you play vs Orks add several Noise Marine squads, 8 Marines with sonic blasters, 5 Marines with blastmaster, and 6 Noise Marines with AC (doom siren, power weapon) in Rhinos. In larger games, add a large Termie squad with combi-weapons. Should work also vs Orks.

If you're going to fight Orks, I suggest you pick up lots of Terminators, Berzerkers, and Tzeentchian Sorcerers (Warptime and Wind of Chaos). A Chaos Lord with a Bloodfeeder will either explode in your face, or annihilate an entire mob of Orks on his own, and either way is dashedly entertaining.

You don't have to. It's your choice really, but as useful as Fzorgle is, other options are better for certain situations. If you're playing against a mech army, take a Tzeetch DP/Sorcerer with Bolt of change. Great for anti-tank. A Lord with a Daemon weapon can maul any normal unit that gets in the way or commit suicide. Havocs with autocannons are awesome imo. Lascannons are stronger, you may argue, but eight strength 7 shots makes short work of most units. TSons are out of luck unless you're against MEQs. Zerkers are awesome in CC, but getting them there can be an issue. PMs are very tough, give them plasmas and you're good to go. NMs are great, always give them sonic blasters and a blastmaster.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

In my experience with fighting the Humies of the chaos kind i tend to find that running full mobs of 30 works with great success with a wall of a few kanz [im playing 1500pts tho] also that the kkf is a real steal here, and a small mob of 3 mega nobs are deadly

as i chaos player i can tell you that all chaos players are different, because of all the different guys you can have there are different tactics for all of em, naturally, but most chaps players ( from my judgement) will try to hit you and hit you hard around 2nd to 3rd turn, because its a bit off a guessing game with reserves.
So id be taking terminators and land speeders, or something that can throw alot of foire power all in one turn. because once the daemons come on, theres a chance that you will be facing 20 attacks, maybe more.
So the best thing against chaos id say is the orks, cause once you get them into assault then chaos can faulter really fast, dependin on who you are attacking, but genrally chaos will try and get there assualty trrops up 2 you asap in tanks to assist the deep strikeing units.
