The idea is to use the spine gaunts to give the hormogaunts and tyranid warriors the cover save for the first couple turns. The warriors would give the MC's their cover save. Marching straight across then 4 different broods all leap into CC at the same time, the Flyrant hitting where she's needed. Any constructive criticism is appreciated.

Still at work (can't get the rulebook), so correct me if I'm wrong. If the warrior(s) can block 50% or more of the MC from being seen, it would get the cover save? It just can't block line of sight completely.

If you are playing book missions, then I have a concern about the small spineguant and hormogaunt units in Annihilation. Too many easy to destroy units, you'll come close to tabling the enemy and find you have a draw or a loss......

I could absorb the 14 strong gaunt squad into the two 16's, making them 23's. I don't know where to find the points to increase the size of the hormogaunts tho...

If you read the rule carefully on page 21, it says if a model's body is partially obscured by another unit, then it gets a cover save. It also specifically says that it doesn't actually have to obscure the model, if the LOS goes through a gap in another unit. So, I think even gaunts give MC's a cover save, to most things (not vehicles, walkers, tall infantry).

I really like the list though - looks fun, and I like the varried units. I'll definitely try something like that!

The list seems weak.

Not even one unit of Stealers.

Carapace on Warriors who get 4+ cover saves.

Toxin sacs on Hormagaunts.

Zoanthropes that shoot Warp Blast?

Needs some work.

Oh really? I'll check it out after work, thanks for the heads up.

Stelek, that was a remarkably unproductive post. Thanks for contributing.

It was?

Could you be more specific when you say 'constructive criticism'?

I didn't just say it sucked, I told you why it sucked.

I started to say the same thing, but upon closer inspection, it appears that in his own back handed way, he did point out what he would change. However a little more detail on how to spend the point savings on (stealers obviously, but in what configuration) from the things being taken out and what exactly should be done with the zonethropes might have gone a ways towards making it sound more constructive and less... condescending.

I'll be going over the MC rules more carefully tonight for sure.

Heya Stelek. We've disagreed in YMDC but I respect your list building skills. Here's my "why's" to your post.

No Stealers - Using Warriors instead for the leaping. With the Talons/Claws they're doing the same thing. The Carapace was there for them to survive a bit in H2H though I can see why it's not needed. Would you really insist on Stealers?

Toxin Sacs on Hormies - With the new vehicle assault rules, and my last game of 5th, I kept wishing my gaunts were Str4 to be able to at least do SOMETHING to vehicles. Bad idea?

Zoanthropes with Warp Blast - I thought this was standard? How would you use them differently?

I recommend stealers because smart players fear them. Acid Maw or Feeder Tendrils make them nasty. Running in from a board edge makes them a neat threat.

I never use Zoanthropes. Anything I cannot stun with guns, I either ignore or kill in CC. Stunned is not shooting me, and is good enough. That is how Tyranids are built, and trying to go around it just makes for weaker lists. You want to kill vehicles, run over them with CC units.

Warriors with leaping is fine, but they will win big or lose big in CC--and you'll know the minute they hit. Carapace armor will have only a small effect, IMO. I think having Init and WS upgrades are better for them, unless you have stealers with feeder tendrils...

Instead of the Zoanthropes, would you put in another Gunfex?

I'll play with the points tonight a bit and try to fit in a unit of stealers as well. Tendrils is probably the way they'll go as it's the cheaper of the two upgrades.

Would you remove the chitin from the gunfex's to free up points for the stealer squad?

Removing the 14 strong gaunt brood, bumping the other 2 broods to 20 and using the leftover points for stealers as well?

Removing Toxin Sacs from Hormies would free up 24 points per squad. Is it really that bad of an upgrade?

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions Stelek. Can I bother you to take a look at the other two lists I've posted as well? <links below>

I would add another gunfex, yes. Vehicles are much harder to kill, but your Zoanthropes are not.

I don't run much in the way of upgrades on my Fexes. Takes points away from other things.

The Hormies are sacrifice troops. They tie something up, move it out of position, and in general die quickly in CC. Why waste points on 1 turn wonders?

I'll gladly look at the other lists.

Ok, here's a somewhat revised list using some of Stelek's ideas

Hive Tyrant (Flyrant) - 205
Wings, Implant Attack, Toxin Sacs (+1 S), Flesh Hooks, Warp Field, TwLink Devourer, Lash Whip + Bonesword

Gunfex - 148
V-Cannon
Strangler
Enhanced Senses (+1 BS)

Gunfex - 148
As above

Gunfex - 148
As above

Dakkafex - 113
Enhanced Senses (+1 BS)
Twl Devourer x2

Dakkafex - 113
As above

4 x Tyranid Warriors - 128
Rending Claws
Scything Talons
Leaping

4 x Tyranid Warriors - 128
As above

12 x Hormogaunts - 120

12 x Hormogaunts - 120

16 Spinegaunts - 80

16 Spinegaunts - 80

12 Genestealers - 204
Feeder Tendrils

It leaves 15 points left. I looked into what it'll take to get all the warriors +1 Init, 24 points. +1 WS, 16 points. With Feeder Tendrils from the stealers they probably won't need the WS as much. The Bonesword on the Tyrant can give them Catalyst so is the Init needed? Alternatively, I can toss the 15 points into the gaunt squads.

Lastly, though I'm thinking it's a bad idea, split the stealer brood into 2 broods of 6 to spread the tendril love throughout the army? I'm thinking it'll make the units too frail.

Too frail? How so? In CC? Or against shooting? Putting all your stealers in one unit doesn't really do anything but make your opponents shooting more efficient. I'd split them up.
