Subject: Starting Beasts of Chaos - Seeking Feedback!

I have completed my Warhammer 40,000 army and am looking to build a starter army for Warhammer Fantasy. I am curious what a good starting points value would be, that would be enough to get in games at my local GW or Hobby Shop. I am aiming to play Beasts of Chaos, and potentially a Khorne marked Beasts list. I have a Shaggoth, a Wargor with Axe and Shield, a Wargor with the Standard from the old boxed set, and a Wargor with Great Weapon. I also have many Gors and Ungors already, a Chariot, and five Centigors.
I'm not daunted by the size of a starting list. Is 2,000 points too ambitious to start out at? If I only build a thousand will I get any games? What did you start at?

I personally love 1000 point games and have played far more of those than 2000. For me when I plan and build armies I end up doing 1000, 2000, 2250. Which equates to small games, standard games, tournament games in my mind.
What you've got sounds like 1000 points easily, should be getting games in no problem.

a great starting point is 1000, as that is what is played at many stores games nights. most tourneys run 2250 in my area, so if you feel a bit more ambitious you could go for that. the volume of gors at that level is fairly daunting though.

Would this be a decent learning army? Would I get slaughtered?

Beast Herd (13 Gors, Foe Render, Standard, Musician, 10 Ungors)
Beast Herd (8 Gors, Fore Render, Standard, Musician, 10 Ungors)
Tuskgor Chariot
Dragon Ogre Shaggoth (Great Weapon, Light Armor)

I think it can bring the pain pretty solidly, even if it isn't an 'optimized' beast list. Just watch out for your Khorne characters being baited around with their frenzy - maybe put them both in the bigger unit to keep more control on your army?

I have browsed this forum, looking at the other beasts lists (they seem to be few) what would I need to add to "maximize" this list? I have no problem buying lots of Chariots, I hear they are well liked for their points. I could include some hounds as well.
What are the typical Khorne mainstays?

khorne should have a bestigor unit, even a really small one as they have 2 attack a piece then and don't suck like normal beasts do. take less gors always. basically you only want to have enough gors for one rank (front) and all ungors behind them just for the extra spear attacks. other than that take a chariot or two, and that's about all you need. also i'd only take one beast herd as they are as reliable as a unit of skinks on the charge

I love the shaggoth, he is my ace. I pick the thing that is going to give me the most trouble and let him loose after it. He might be a bit overpriced in a 1k game, almost 1/3rd of your points, and i would consider a unit of dragon ogres/chaos ogres instead. This would let you bring a few more units; i love bringing two 10hound units for 120 points as flankers or to help flesh out your deployment phase. I just dont think your opponent is going to bring anything big enough to require a hoss like shaggy to take out.

1,000 Points Beasts of Khorne
Wargor (Mark of Khorne, Shield, Axe of Khorne, Heavy Armor)
Wargor (Mark of Khorne, Heavy Armor, Banner of Rage)
Khorngors (9 Khorngors, Gouge-horn, Musician, Standard)
Beast Herd (4 Gors, Foe Render, Standard, Musician, 10 Ungors)
Tuskgor Chariot
Tuskgor Chariot
Dragon Ogres (3 Ogres, Light Armor)
Total 994
2,000 Point Variation (Goal Army)
Beastlord (Heavy Armor, Shield, Axe of Khorne, Mark of Khorne)
Wargor (Heavy Armor, Beastbanner, Mark of Khorne)
Khorngors (17 Khorngors, Gouge-horn, Standard, Musician)
Beast Herd (4 Gors, Foe Render, Musician, Standard, 15 Ungors)
Beast Herd (4 Gors, Foe Render, Musician, Standard, 15 Ungors)
Cebtigors (7 Centigors, Gorehoof, Shield, Standard, Musician)
Tuskgor Chariot x3
Dragon Ogre Shaggoth (Great Weapon, Light Armor)
Dragon Ogres (Great Weapon, Light Armor)
Total: 1998
I guess in the 2,000 point list, I will substitute out the Minotaurs that I already own for the Ogres from the 1,000 point list, I think in the higher pointed games the Shaggoth will be a nice visual along side Dragon Ogres, vs. just taking Minotaurs.
I have a Beastlord with Great Weapon that I added a nasty spike to, but he is not yet painted, I think maybe I should use him instead of the Beastlord with Shield, as what kind of Khorne worshipper wastes time with a Shield? Though my shielded lord does look really good, heh, I think if I can paint the Great Weapon lord to look just as good I may take him instead.
Thoughts/Feedback? This is helping me out more than I can say.
