I am just coming back after a long hiatus from 40k, and I have some questions about this new 5th ed. I was reading about how sniper rifles now have rending, and I am curious if anyone one has thought of using them in a larger group i.e 20+ rifles.

I made a sample list with Last chancers, SWS, and light infantry and I had 24 and I was still putting in weapons for tanks and infantry. Does anyone think that a neavy sniper list will be viable now with this rule.

My other question is does anyone ever use the catachan list anymore. I think the doctrine based one is stupid, I hate ogryns. I love the Idea of a Deathworld army but it sounds like if you run guard you have to do the 5 doctrine chump list in the codex for catachans..... any thoughts/advice on this? Also has anyone seen the possible army list in Apocalyse Reloaded? I heard of a Deathworld list in there.

I have owned made:

From what I understand sniper rifles now use your BS instead of hitting on 2+ and rending is now on the wound roll instead of the attack roll. So while its still useful less shots will be hitting so you will have less chances for the AP1 rend.

They took the Catachan list off-line, so I doubt we will be seeing much of that. I am sure most players would let you use it in friendly matches if you can find a copy, but that would be about it.

The Apoc Reloaded book has a Catachan themed formation, but it basically gives you some bonuses for taking some Hardened Veteran and optional Special Weapons squads from Codex: Imperial Guard.

About the best you are going to get out of the current codex is 16 (10 Ratlings, 6 Special Weapons troopers.) The cost of Last Chancers specialists, even with BS4, is pretty prohibitive for weapons that are not as inherently killy as plasma/melta. Massed sniper rifles has potential, but the current IG codex does not give you much of a way to field it competively.

But I would love to be proved wrong . . . if you have the models, it would at least make for a fun game to give it a shot.

Catachan Codex is still on line, but is definitely 3rd/4th ed. My brother plays a Catachan army and I am looking forward to his visit this fall to see how the new game changes them up.

Not sure what to do about the TLOS as the catachans ability to see twice as far as normal units will work differently. I imagine we'll play the old area terrain rules with the new everything else.

Good catch . . . I just looked on the US site, I forgot about UK/CA.

The GW errata on Page 1 of the current IG FAQ and their ruling on the Kroot fieldcraft ability in the Tau FAQ would seem to rule out any possibility of them continuing to benefit from the Deathworld Veterans rule in regards to Line of Sight.
