soo, i just finished assembling my new treeman and now i have to think about how to integrate him into my lovely WE army. i prefer the shooty, hit-n-run/avoid any kind of CC for as long as possible while i draw them in then hit them with wardancers and dryads. but im not really sure how to use him as best as i could.
comments/questions welcomed. if you need more info tell me.

A Treeman works best as a Treeman Ancient with Annoyance of Nettlings. It gives him the ability to somewhat neutralize an enemy character while your army deals with the rest of his.

for the tactics your talking about the treeman is about the worst thing to use. yes he moves somewhat fast but he can't avoid stuff too long and will def have trouble doing hit and run. treemen are front and center units who go "here i am, come and shoot me!!!" and the whole time your opponent is busy dealing with him and fairly distracted your other skirmishers and shooting unit piece meal the rest of his army so the treeman can simply move in by himself and finish off everything that's left (which shouldn't be too much).
essentially use him as a distraction in the middle and move him to challenge opponents big blocks while your shooters and skirmishers/fast cav move up the flanks and riddle the hell out of midd field units, other skirmishers, and warmachines.

The treeman is a good supplimentary monster, which is best used to add to an already powerful magic/shooting/combat phase. I tend to keep mine right in the heart of my army Like B666 said, because although they have an impressive array of abilities none are overwhelming on their own. I dont flaunt mine quite as much as it seems B666 does, but the opponent definatly rethinks charging your weaker units when they know that behemoth is going to wreck their flank the next turn. Universally trees are the brutes of the WE army and this guy is the daddy of them all, definatly the best anvil, and arguably the best hammer in the army.

Yes, the treedude indeed has good hitting power, good durability and neat array of other abilities which makes him a excellent combination of hammer&anvil unit. If you have a bsb hanging around, it makes the tree even better anvil. You should be very careful when facing either dwarfs of tomb kings as their magical and flaming warmachines can chop the big guy down in one hit.

I have faced many treemen in my time, especially while I was actively playing Bretonnia. My friend just didn't get into hand to hand until late and had some bad luck with the dice. Ex: a group of 16 Peasant Bowman making a treeman take a leadership test at the end of combat! (he inflicted no wounds!) also having a group of 4 Knights with a Paladin not take any wounds (gotta love that Ward save!) and making him run away at the end of combat. Sorry to get off the subject. From what I have seen it needs to be there as a threat to get into the gak of things. Threaten a flank with it or use it as an 'Anchor' (No pun intended) in the center.

hide him from cannons!!! I had 1 cannon in my army and on the first turn i got a lucky shot and rolled a 6 for the d6 wounds it causes and the 375 point tree was destroyed by a 100 point cannon

Yeah, that happens.
Also a 100 point cannon will destroy itself at times, too!

375 of eggs, one big t6 3+as 5+ws 6 wound basket. He wont win the game by himself but in an army that is severly lacking in hth beef, he is a good addition.

Treeman has a bit of a problem recently, as everyone has to figure out how to cope with the Vampire Counts regeneration banner. Typically that means a tough guy with a flaming weapon, who transfers neatly to "charge Treebeard" duty.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

While it is true that ONE tree man doesn't win the game, I will comment that in a 2.500 point army, you can field an Ancient tree man+ a Spellweaver lvl 4 AND 2 tree man's as Rare choices.. = 3 tree man (1 charecter) and a lvl 4 wizard with Lore of Beast/Life.
My usual list on 2.500 points
1 Ancient tree man with annoyence of netlings
1 spellweaver with lore of life
total 625p.
108 glade guards
total 1296p.
2 treeman
total 570p.
2491p. total
