P. 52 of new rulebook: "Models with jet packs (not jump packs) have the 'relentless' special rule"

P. 31 of Tau codex: Marker drone Unit Type: As owner.

If you take a suit with jet packs, the marker drone also is a jet pack unit, giving the drone relentless.

The new faq has killed taking marker drones with Broadsides, because the drones don't have the stabalization system. However, anything that is a jetpack and takes marker drones gets networked MOBILE markerlight. Of course, networked means that the unit itself can use the markerlights. This might change how people take and use suits. For instance, instead of taking targeting array on your suits, it might make more sense to take the marker drones.
Instead of the standard death rain (twin missile pods and targetting array) you might take two marker drones and take the target lock instead of the targetting array. You're only paying 15 more points, but every suit can target something different and you have two mobile marker lights.

Then again, maybe you take the same suit options but take the drones to be missile launcher shots. It's certainly a new way to play.

Good catch.

I found the problem with this is when you get shot at, since you have a larger footprint...and everything in the unit is expensive/don't want to lose it.

You can also cripple your crisis suits who don't have alot of slots to spend on.

However, a Shas'O leading a unit of Kroot...oh yeah, that's money. The unit doesn't lose anything. You can just put two markerlights into anything you want, you can move and fire...as relentless doesn't have a * next to it. Since you should never send a Shas'O into combat with kroot, he can leave anytime using his Jetpack rules.

You can also save points by attaching the Shas'O to a Crisis suit unit, moving away, firing separately, then assault moving back into coherency.

Just my 2.

Nope.

"In order to join a unit, an independent character
simply has to move so that he is within the 2"
coherency distance of a friendly unit at the end of
their Movement phase."

"An independent character may not join or leave a
unit during the Shooting and Assault phases –
once shots are fired or assaults are launched it is
too late to join in or duck out! "

Yeah, I know.

I hope it gets fixed by a FAQ.

Jet pack units are unique, need a ruling to make them unique.

After all, having the same rule from 4E (poorly written in context then too) copied and pasted to 5E (and still poorly written in context now) is no reason not to hope GW will allow this.

Not that it's that big a deal, you can always pay 5 points for a HW target lock...but you still lose since only the Shaso can target other things in a Crisis unit.

Not that I'd ever run this configuration, I think stealth markerlights are the win. lol

It could have been *GASP* INTENTIONAL that the rule is the way it is...
