Where is my proof, you ask? It is right in front of most of our faces. If you have the new 40k rulebook, you have all the proof you need.

Turn to page 245 in the Warhammer 40k 5th edition rulebook. Please take note of the Space Marine army roster. If you study it closely, you will see that many of the points values are not those of the current Space Marine Codex.

For example, a Predator with autocannon and 2 heavy bolters is listed as 85 points. A Space Marine Tactical squad with missile launcher and flamer is 170. A Rhino with hunter-killer missile is 50 points.

Rumor has it that if a tactical squad takes 10 marines it gets a flamer and missile launcher for free. The list in the rulebook supports this rumor as well as other changes such as cheaper vehicles.

What do you think of my deduction?

Zing!

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity......

You're forgetting the veteran sergeant.

If you had made a deduction, you'd show how your conclusion necessarily follows from the evidence in the rulebook rather than merely being supported by that evidence. It could be the case, for example, that the Flamethrower and Missile Launcher are both costed at ten points, leaving 15pts apiece for the rest of the squad.

There are many ways to look at it

1) The flamer costs +5 points and the missile launcher is +15.
2) The flamer costs +10 points and the missile launcher is +10 as well.
3) The squad's veteran sergeant is included. Also, the earlier rumor about free weapons for ten man squads specifically said that a flamer and heavy bolter were the "free" weapons. So we can deduce that the veteran sergeant is +15 and to upgrade the heavy bolter to a missile launcher is +5 points.
4) It's a typo.
5) It's based off an early "playtest" version of the codex and not accurate.
6) etc....

Won't happen, GW would not try something as radical as a point increase to balance the rules. Thats what special rules are for.

Well CSM marines are all 17 points, and they don't get the benefit of the ATSKNF special rule. Having them at 15 points would be broken. I think that they should all be 18 points, simply to give a bonus to those of us who cant use the ridiculous special rules. 'Combat tactics' my a**e.

Drake_Marcus: It's true- that's why the Space Wolves love termie armour so much. The whole "bear" thing they've got going on is just a thinly veiled cover-up of their huge, hairy cleavage.

CSM means Chaos Space Marine and they're 15 points each. Did you in fact mean Codex Space Marines? Or am I missing some particularly obscure sarcasm?

According to that list scouts would be 18 pts a model. Slap on a reduction in WS and BS and what do we get?

If it's a 10 man squad with vet sarge upgrade and two heavy weapons included for 170, that's cheap.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

It's a good thing that all of the information in the rulebook regarding units is 100% dead-on correct, so this is exactly what we should be basing rumor information on.

what bearing does this topic have on anything? Why can't people just wait for the new codex to hit the shelves instead of worrying about what the rulebook lists for the cost of a squad. The Internet is a great thing, but because we leave in an instant gratification world, I wonder if anyone likes to be surprised anymore. I love reading rumors and the like, but every once in while, I do like to be surprised.

Did you skip the part of my post that said I still read the rumors? I pick and choose which threads I read.

ARE YOU KIDDING! How could you possibly think GW would do something like making flamers cost -50?!?!?! It's clearly this:

y = cost of squad
x = number of models in the squad
c = number of special weapons in the squad

y = 1/2x^2 * c + 1
