I got in a depat at a game store with some fellow players. We were talking about how the Vampire counts have a banner that gives the unit a 4+ ward save against all ranged attacks. I mentioned how it would even help repell a comet. It was then that someone tried to say that comet was not a ranged attack. This confused me cause I always figured anything that hit someone without being in base to base was considered a ranged attack. If comet is not a ranged attack, is it somehow a melee attack? I don't think so, so what is it? Am I right in saying its a ranged attack, or is it in some weird category of its own.

And to answer your question comet of cassadora is NOT a ranged attack, its a "remains in play" magic effect, similiar to your "banshees' howl"?

Generally magic effects that are not magical missiles are not ranged attacks.
The high elf FAQ addresses this with lion cloaks somewhat...
