Hello, dakka. Long time lurker, first time poster here.
I am semi-new to this game- playing Necrons for about 2 1/2 years. As much as I love my space zombies, its time to switch things up. You see, I am a man (loosely defined, 16 makes me a man right?) that enjoys conversion and the 'crons are not satisfying me in that department so Im going for the most mutable of armies: Tyranids. I have my plans for conversion (Nurgle infested Tyranids. Tentacles abound) I have no clue where to start on an army list. My best thought at this point is the new Tyranid army box offered for 5th ed by GW because it is A) cheap B) my target point value C) looks balanced, but what do I know? So I'm here to ask YOU, the vets, is this a good investment (very important for someone my age, $200 is pretty steep) or should I mix 'n match my own? Many thanks for your insight.
-Eli

Yes, now buy two of them and you have a army.

I agree with Stelek... buy two Assault Brood boxes and you can field a good Tyranid force from only the models provided.
HQ - Warriors
Elites - Warriors & Carnifex
Troops - Gaunts, Hormagaunts & Genestealers
Heavy Support - Carnifex
Fast Attack - Winged Warriors (needs some conversion but doable)
You can easilly field 1850 pts. with two boxes and have your choice of Biomorphs to enhance the broods.
HOWEVER... if you can only buy one box to start, go for it and prepare to play in 1500pt. battles. That's a great start for the amount of money invested.
Enjoy!

The Carnifexes, Stealers and Gaunts are great.
What are you going to do with 12 Warriors?

Warriors are good in 5th dude.......
Play with them... watch people roll their eyes everytime you put them on the table after the game with them
Gaunts are not as good now. If you're going to buy the assault brood, I would try and find someone who would buy the gaunts from you, or trade them. Carnifex's are great still, more for assault now, and Genestealers are deadly.
Ask Stelek for the post on his Warrior/Stealer army... very nasty and would be cheaper for a young man to build.
I know how you feel, being 19 makes it hard for me to buy an army

Sometimes you just have to let em' go... |

Well there is an HQ requirement in any army list... the Warriors meet this without any further investment of cash on a Tyrant or Broodlord.
Put Deathspitters on them and run two units of six each, if you haven't tried them they are surprisingly effective & fun in 5th now.
Finally they are the ONLY synapse provided in the boxed set & are usefull even in 'Stealer only lists, although I'd use the Gaunts and keep them in line using the Warriors.
