Alright so I'm playing dwarves, but my girl has been busy painting dryads for her future wood elf list. Since neither of us have actually played a full game yet, we have nothing in the way of experience and were hoping this forum could help us come up with a competitve list. She knows she wants to build an army focused on the forest spirit side of the wood elf list, but not so focused that she would be ignoring strong options.
We have already purchased 16 glade guard, a treekin, a tree man and a handful of dryads and would like for the tree spirits and most of the glade guard to make it into the final build (at least 10). The dragon is a beautiful piece and if points permit, we would like to be able to include it in the army. If the dragon is not a competitive option, is a treeman anciant any good? I hope this is the right place to post this request and any help, ideas or even tactics are welcome. Thank you already for taking the time to read this.
:-)

How many points are you looking for?

All forest spirit armies are a rare breed of WE, because they are all immune to psychology and as such cannot flee as a charge reaction. i would suggest some glade riders as core rather than glade guard, but anything that you can use to bait/redirect would probably help the army.

I don't think he posts over here, but the guy to ask about the ins and outs of a forest spirt WE list is James Hyde. Goes by the handle Domus over on Illinois Warhammer Fantasy Battles (www.iwfb.org). Did pretty decently at the last Hillbilly with his Pumpkin King list. Pop over there and ask him. He should be able to give you some advice on what is good and what pitfalls to avoid.

Tell him DJ sent you.

The Ultra forge minis are awesome.

Unfortunately the Wood Elf Forest Dragon is not very competitive. Its a nice model but the Lord or Twilight Sisters on Top are vulnerable and it is not as good as other dragon options like High Elves or Dark Elves.

If you are going with the Forest Spirit Theme you want a Treeman Ancient as the Lord. He is very good if you back him up with a BSB to give him a reroll on his stubborn leadership. Give the BSB a bow and the Hail of Doom Arrow also.

To round out your heros you need a couple spell singers for tree singing and magic defense.

A second Treeman is very good to get the most out of your BSB.

You can make a very nasty wall of Treekin and 2 Treemen with the BSB behind and maybe make a little hole for him to shoot through with his hail of doom arrow.

Glade Guard Scounts aren't really worth the points better to just take another 10 regular Glade Guard.

They are not forest spirits but at least one group of Glade Riders 5-6 with a Musician are really good for march blocking, baiting, artillery hunting.

Wild Riders are also very nice but I don't think you will have points for them at 2000 if you are taking Treekin too.

My 2250 list is something like

Treeman Ancient w Cluster of Radiants & Annoyance of Nettings

Battle Standard Bearer w Asyendils Bane and Hail of Doom Arrow

Level 2 Spellsinger with Cardigor's Staff and Dispell Scroll

Level 2 Spellsinger with 2 Dispel Scroll

10 Glade Guard
8 Dryads
8 Dryads
6 Glade Riders with musician

3 Treekin
8 Wardancers
6 Wild Riders with musician, standard and warbanner

1 Treeman

You can go with more Dryads if you want more Forest Spirits.

To get down to 2000 not sure what I would do maybe cut the Wild Riders and drop something else not sure on points because don't have my book handy.

I Agree with Kiwidru that Glade riders are the way to go, they are much much more taticly flexible than your glade guard. As for Characters you will probably want some magic Defense since Wood elves being low toughness, little or no armor and most of our ward saves negated by magics. There are 3 main approaches to this, go caster heavy get 3-4 wizards and generate lots of dispell dice and get lots of dispel scrolls, usally 1 spellweaver, 1-2 spellsingers with 1-2 dispell scrolls a piece and a lv1 branchwraith with cluser of radiants. Go with a Mix 2 fighty chars and usally a branchwraith with a cluster of radiants and a scroll caddie, or go with all fighty chars with 1 lvl 1 scroll caddie (2 dispel scrolls)

As far as fighty charaters go really the only once that all wood elves can agree on that should be in most lists is what is known as the "standard alter" Its a Alter kindred noble with a great weapon, shield and light armor, with The Helm of the Hunt and Hail of Doom arrow. This guy is a beast move of 9, charge 18" with 5 WS7 S6 attacks this guy is a mage hunter, and can usally hold up decently against most other heros on the charge. Some people pull the doom arrow off of him and give him some random 30 point item.

Dragons are usally discoraged for Woodelves because its sooooo easy to kill a wood elf rider since wood elves have very little armor and all wardsave items we can get are all conditional (besides the 6+ ward) and the dragon and rider takes up a lord and a hero slot and if the lord dies there is a good chance you just lost the hero slot as well.

Special choices for me hands down goes to Wild riders and Wardancers. Wardancers are some of the most feared units in the game, on a charge 6 wardancers can generate 18 WS6 S4 attacks on the charge, and can have killing blow VS those tough/armored foes. Wild Riders are Wood elf "Heavy Cav" They have light armor and are mounted, and they have 2 ward saves, 5+ vs non-magic, 6 vs all, and have MR 1. They are S5 on the charge and when they are in combat and they didnt charge both the riders and the mounts get +1 attack. Treekin are very useful and provide a nice anvil unit and support for the Treeman, but like the treeman they draw lots of fire because they are big and tough looking.

All Tree armies aren't that rare, since dryads are agruable the best core unit in the game, an all Tree army is really a tough cookie to crack for enemy armies since they dont run, they are scary, and they are tough. They do lack much of the tactical pinash of a full wood elf army.

I my self play a heavy Forest spirit list, although my Hero choices change quite a bit, here is a 2250 list im gonna take to a tourny for an example for you:

"Orion's Wild Party" 2250

Wardancer Highborn 290
Blades of Loec, AoN, Amaranthine Brooch
*Standard Alter 158
Greatweapon, Shield, Light armor, Helm of the Hunt, Hail of doom arrow
Branch Wraith 140
L1 wiz, CoR
Spellsinger 175
L2, 2x Dispel Scroll
Core:
3x8 Dryads 96 per, 288 total
2x Glade Riders w/mus 129 per, 258 total
Special
2x6 Wardancers 108 per, 216 total
2x6 Wild riders w/full command 192 per 384 total
Rare
Treeman 285
Great eagle 50

More than half the list is forest spirits, and 3/4 of the list is immune to psychology, the units that are not immune are purposuly put into the list for charge baiting. I personaly dont think Glade guard are really worth it when compaired to glade riders and Dryads. They just dont have the same impact on the game as Dryads or GR. I also focus on Tatical Flexability and speed since they are nearly one and the same for woodelves.

Thanks a lot for all of the replies, and the above mini's really are beautiful I'll have to look into them more-do they have anything of that quality in the way of dwarves?
Part of me is glad to hear that the dragon isn't competitive because it's such a huge point investment for something that isn't a tree. BTW, the army is Whompy's House of Awesome-and I'm sure we'll end up with a treeman anciant and second treeman in the list-how fun. Later on, when I have more time I'll post a rough build that I hope you'll be able to help me turn into something worth playing.
