So I broke down and purchased one of the Necron Warrior Phalanx box sets. I have very little experience with them other than fighting them during third edition. I borrowed a friend's army and played with them a couple of times during 4th. But otherwise I'm a novice with these guys. So any help would be appreciated.
HQ: Necron Lord
w/ War Scythe, Resurrection Orb & Veil of Darkness
Elite: Flayed Ones (x8)
Troops: Warriors (x20)
Troops: Warriors (x20)
Troops: Warriors (x10)
Fast Attack: Destroyers (x3)
Fast Attack: Destroyers (x3)
Fast Attack: Scarab Swarms (x5)
w/ Distruption Fields
Heavy Support: Heavy Destroyer
Heavy Support: Heavy Destroyer
Heavy Support: Monolith
Total Necrons: 67
Phase Out: 16
The basic plan is for the small unit of warriors and scarabs to be CC speed bumps for the two big units of warriors. The HDs will be hanging out behind the Monolith or terrain whenever possible. The Flayed ones will be used to outflank and contest objectives.
So what do you think?

At 2000 pts, I'd drop both Heavy destroyers for two monoliths. Flayed Ones are horrible imo. Use Immortals instead, or Pariahs if you really need CC.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

Drop the destroyers and monolith for more heavy destroyers.
Run more scarabs.
Run less warriors.

What makes Flayed Ones so horrible? How many Immortals would you use?

With less warriors, how do you avoid phase out?

Flayed ones are horrible because they are essentially assault marines on the charge with no power weapons or rending. Last time you got owned by a sarge-less assault marine squad was when your 5 Tau got rolled by 3 assault marines?
Immortals are good in units of 5x2 at a minimum. Anything else you can squeeze in = good.
With all of those warriors, you phase out faster once the units get poofed in CC. You have to run away from combat, and warriors cannot do that. CC + Warriors = Lost warriors.
Necrons will get a much more viable codex than they have now, you just have to wait.

I play Space Wolves, Emperor's Children, & Necrons. I'm always waiting for a viable codex.
So relying on a smaller number of units with higher toughness is the prefered way to go in 5th then?

It's always been that way for Necrons, really.
Tri-Lith was annoying in it's castleness, but it was beatable without much fanfair.
Oh and don't forget scarabs!!!!

Yes, scarabs with disruption fields can do nasty things to mech armies/tanks. I wouldn't field them against vindicators though... that large blast will crush all your tiny bigs.

CD, Codex: Necrons has a serious lack of valid units, and that makes collecting a strong force of them extremely difficult.
To start, there are 2 flavors of competitive Necrons, shooty Necrons and Defensive Necrons. Shooty Necrons emphasize Immortals/Destroyers while Defensive Necrons bring along monoliths and Orbs.
The 5th edition, unfortunately, has basically killed defensive Necrons, as combat resolution won't let them stick in combat long enough to teleport out.
If you want to make an effective tournament Necron force nowadays you pretty much need to take 20 warriors, an HQ (either the Deceiver or a ROVOD Lord), and then Immortals and Destroyers in whatever proportions you prefer. 3 singleton Heavy D's, or 3 pairs, are probably needed to handle 5th edition's anti-tank difficulties. It used to be an A-calibre list, probably still at least B+.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

With the changes to 5th ed, I am not so enamored with immortals anymore.
Destroyer and Hvy Destroyer spam was solid in 4th ed and even more so in 5th ed.
