Hi. Storywise, does it work to grant models in a Word Bearers army marks of chaos other then Undivided?

if you want to play pure and fluffy wordbearers, you should only give them undivided, and not play cult troops... AKA, bad idea. sorry

usually they are devoted to no single god in particular, though they may call one or another for more favor than usual in a particular battle for certain traits that would lend to their overall scheme.

before battle the warband will all gather round the fire and sing songs actually they all get round the dark apostle and he casts some magic stones or bones, or whatev and the way these things falls on the ground gives the dark apostle a battle plan, whether from a vision or just his interpretations of the rocks, etc. His warriors will then execute the battle plans he orders from these stones to the word. which in some cases may have a squad charging into forces they could not dream of beating. either way they follow orders zealously and to the tee. sometimes this pays off, and sometimes ends in disaster.

finally overall the word bearers move into battle completely on foot, and do not use tanks or bikes unless absolutely necessary. meaning to be completely true to background you should at max have a rhino or two. also they use tons of daemons, and use squads 12 men strong (i myself don't adhere to this one as i don't have enough points for 12 man units.)

i know it's more than you asked for but i hate half arsing it.

Since Word Bearers are just a color scheme now I'd say use whatever floats your boat in the army list.

And on a more serious note I know they're "supposed" to be an undivided list but this doesn't mean you couldn't have various units in the same army dedicated to certain gods. Really, with an unidivided army I think you could use the fluff to justify pretty much any given unit or units appearing in your army, just use the color scheme to keep it all looking coherent on the table top.

If you want to throw in marks squads or cult squads play black legion. I play word bearers, everything is undivided. Its tempting to take a marked daemon prince for lash or a squad of plaguemarines to hold an objective. If thats what you want play black legion, that was the old codex's answer to people who want to take any combination of units. But yeah they are just a colour scheme.

I'd use 2 demon princes w/ warptime, 2 chosen squads w/champ whatever mark/icon, and 2 large (15 or so) CSM squads with whatever mark/icon you want. then fill the rest with a greater demon and as many squads of 8-10 demons as you can squeeze in.

the demons will start to arrive second turn from the infiltrating chosen, most likely getting second turn charge. Chosen have lots of special weapons, so you can load them out with plasma or meltas.

It won't be the most powerful army in the world, but it will be a very tactical army, as the placement of your infiltrating chosen will be key.

Daemons in CSM armies suck. Take one or two units as add-ons if you like, not more.

I beg to differ, 15 of them will run through a whole lot when they are able to DS and Assault. They are infinitely better than the Deamon army demons if they get into asault when dropped instead of having to weather turn of shooting.

I play WBs and run Undivided squads of 10 with two units of 15 Lesser Demons and a Lord with the MoTz because I can't stand a measley 5++ save.

I have never run Cult troops with them (as that's why I play WBs to run regular CSMs).

Not sure where Bastirous666 is getting his info, but I didn't know they shun any form of speed/transport. Although ironically that's how mine roll (er...or don't roll...lol).

Thanks everyone. Forgive me for trying to sound like a tryhard, but currently for the hell of it I'm trying to make a Codex: Word Bearers. I'm just asking about the marks so I can work out on what is meant to be what.
