Maybe I got this wrong, but if a Lord is within two inches of a squad of CSM and lashes a unit a few inches (say into rapid firing range).... do all the CSM in the unit have to shoot at the same time as the lash going off, or can they shoot after the unit is drawn closer?

As the effects of shooting, lash and bolters, happen at the same time as the squad fires as a whole, can one be used first, IE lash with lord, then shoot with CSM?

I guess what I am asking, is there a "stack" order in 40k?

Don't have the chaos codex in front of me. I think I will wait to answer.

All shooting from a single unit is performed simultaneously. That would include psychic powers that are used instead of a shooting weapon.

If the Lord is a part of the unit (which he would be if he's sitting within 2" of them at the end of the movement phase) then range for the bolters is measured at the same time as for the Lash.

Eh, I disagree really. Weapons are fired simultaneously but that doesn't really mean their ranges are checked at the same time. I can measure my lash, find it to be in range, use it, apply the effect immediately [cuz it doesn't really call for delaying it] and then measure my other guns. It's like rolling for all your bolters and then firing your flamer - obviously you're checking the flamer range after the others.

And would you feel the same way if I did the opposite? Moved to within 12", Rapid-fired everything, then lashed the unit further back, out of assault range and perhaps out of retaliation range entirely if I rolled high enough?

Er... yes, I'm afraid it does.

You could, if not for the fact that the rules specifically state on page 18 that all weapons from a single unit are fired at the same time.

Nope. That would be breaking the rules. You would have to place the flamer template before removing any casualties from the bolters. Otherwise, they're not firing at the same time.

That's not the opposite. It's exactly the same thing. Whichever direction the unit is moved, the effect of the lash is applied at the same time as the bolters. You don't get to resolve one then measure range for the other.

Guess this is one for the FAQ then?

Seems pretty cut and dried to me. I don't see how you can be any clearer than "simultaneous".

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

Just move the Lord out of coherency in the movement phase. Do his "shooting" (lash) first as he's no longer in the unit. Then fire your bolters.

Perfect solution as long as you don't mind your sorceror being exposed to return fire from your opponents army.

I don't run Sorcerers (and don't recommend them) for this reason. They don't get shot, but you have to deal with the shooting issues they pose and the slow bodyguards you have to give them.

Since you have to get out of rhinos moving more than 6" in order to use this power, the only places I'd expect to see Lash Sorcerers is in a Raptor army.

I think they are liabilities in any other army.

No, actually, page 18 was the page I referenced. Page 16 would have done as well, though...
