So, the nurgle herald with cloud of flies (offensive and defensive grenades) is in a unit without them (plaguebearers) and gets charged - do the flies affect the unit or just the models "engaged" with the herald?

I was hammered by this over the weekend.

If he's part of the unit, then the unit benefits from the effects of it since, theoretically, some of those attacks could be focused on the herald.

How would that interact with the Herald's independent character status? As an IC, the combat against him is resolved as a separate component in a multi-unit combat. Then you have two units; one is the Plaguebearers themselves, not equipped with the Cloud, and the Herald, who is.

Defensive Grenades only work against models (not Units) assaulting the Unit with the grenades.

Since the IC is a separate Unit in close combat, only the models attacking the IC are affected.

The IC isn't a separate unit, it is actually very clearly a part of the unit it has joined except for the actual attacking part. Defensive grenades say when a model charges a unit with defensive grenades it does not get the bonus attack. The section on ICs says that the character is a part of the unit. I forgot my rulebook at home this morning as i was running late.

It is obviously not clear because I have run into numerous people playing it both ways.

For HTH combat, the IC is treated as a separate unit.
Grenades effect HTH combat.
The IC's grenades affect his separate combat, and not the entire units.

Right. And the actual attacking part is the part that is relevant to the question.

Page 49:
"When the attacks are resolved, however, Independant Characters are always treated as a seperate single-model unit..."

So, an enemy model attacking the IC is attacking a model with Defensive Grenades.
An enemy model attacking the unit the IC joined is attacking a separate unit... and that separate unit does not have Defensive grenades.
